MMA: UFC, Strikeforce etc...

Wondering if anoyne here watches any MMA.. like UFC or Strikeforce?

Gamer_2k4 2011-03-04 10:45

I'm a big UFC fan. I've watched every event for the past couple of years now.

I like the idea and the concept of MMA, but by its own definition, MMA should be a mixture of any and all martial arts, but I don't really see that in competitions. There's a lot of rules that imo, restrict what you can do with the art and converted it to a sport, what with all the rules being in place in a style whose concept shouldn't really have any rules (apart from maybe don't kill each other :p).

Sure, that applies to the vast majority of martial arts today (Karate, Judo, TKD, Muay Thai, BJJ) but what MMA has done is simply took techniques from an assortment of the arts I mentioned and simply use them by the book rather than learning how to truly amalgamate techniques from each style into one single form, eventually creating a true mixed martial art. I like to watch it but to me, it's very reminiscent to boxing events, but with kicks and a grapples included.

Side note: I tend to think styles like Bujinkan and Jeet Kun Do can be considered real mixed martial arts :p

The rules are there so THAT they don't kill each other. Almost every illegal move is such because of the severe injury it could cause. No hitting the throat, no hitting the back of the head, no kneeing the head of a downed opponent, no eye gouging, no groin shots, no small joint manipulation...why do you think those are there? Any one of those could cause permanent injury, and some very well COULD kill the opponent.

It's called Mixed Martial ArtS, not The Mixed Martial Art. MMA isn't about a single discipline that all fighters have; it's referring that fact that a boxer might fight a judoka, or a wrestler might go against a karate player, or jui-jitsu could be used against a muy tai specialist. The individual martial arts are mixed together, hence the name.

MMA is great but I wish it would try and distance itself to the 'bad boy' image it likes to connect itself with. And I'm not just talking about the fighters.

The only Anime I consider that close to MMA is Baki grappler ..(which is one of my favorite manga) The main character kinda learns all sort of martial arts and applies it during his matches..

So this seems to be a very old thread but hey I'd thought i'd just check out if there are still any active mm (preferably UFC) fans out there in the forums who are watching the current series of Ultimate fighter on Fox and what up coming UFC events you are looking forward to? I for one can not wait for Jon Jones vs Rashad Evans.

Gamer_2k4 2012-04-13 15:52

I look forward to any Jon Jones fight, so I can't wait for 145, but I was super excited about 146. Then Overeem had to screw things up and...man, I dunno, I just really wanted to see him fight JDS.

Kizoku Keenan 2012-04-13 16:01

Was very excited for that fight too but apparently the reem had the testosterone level of 15 men lol Question is who will they get to replace him as I just read that the Mir & Cain fight will not be cancelled.

I also look forward to any Jon Jones fight the dude is a legend or at least a legend in the making.

Jeet kune do is not a fighting style ! it is a set of guiding principles to fight as efficiently as possible , Bruce may have taught people , but only taught works for him, it is to use whatever works for you, JKD for a tall dude won't be the same for a small dude, there are no distinct techniques of JKD all move are taken from other styles

On MMA i'd have to agree on that "bad boy" image their doin, I hate it too

UFC 151 Cancelled

Well bad news to all MMA fans UFC 151 IN Las Vegas on September 1st has been canned because of Hendo Injury to his Knee & Jon Jones has Disagreed to fight Chael Sonnen Pretty Pathetic.

ReaperxKingx 2012-08-23 21:44

I know, that fight was going to be good. A future hall of famer vs champion of the new generation.

Mixed Martial Arts Discussion (MMA)

This thread is to discuss all aspects of MMA.

A few examples...

Do you take part in any type of Martial Arts?

Do you watch MMA?

What do you think of UFC and its attempt at monopolising the sport - Is this a good or bad thing?

Are you exited about any upcoming fights/events?

Discuss old fights/events?

Individual fighters - who do you rank as best? (Past, present and future)

Etc...

Anyone else looking forward to UFC 152 on 22/09/12.

Jon 'Bones' Jones Vs Vitor Belfort

Bones has been getting a lot of stick lately for turning down a fight against Cheal Sonnen - However, I believe he had every right to do so. This may affect his mental state when he fights Belfort.

Personally, I hope Belfort wins because I am old fan of his and I know that he can destroy fighters when he brings it! However, I don't see it happening as he may be past his best. That and also that Jones is just too good. The guy is freak of nature and I can't see anyone beating him for a long time. Unless he moves up to heavy weight, where I feel there are many who could.
Any comments? Any fights you are looking forward to?

Big time change of the guard there at UFC on fox last weekend, shogun, Bj Penn mauled. Sad to see but thats the way of life, the new young breed will always rise up.
