Opus: new audio standard and FOSS

Opus is now a standard, its an audio codec that is completely open source and free, and its better than Vorbis and even NeroAAC (HE-AAC) it can go as low as 6kbps with tolerable audio quality

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opus_(audio_format)

and on that article they are also planning on a FOSS video codec too, is that Daala?

Probably. But unlike with Opus, Google is not in on this and may throw in their own competing video codec.

Related to fansubbing how?
What's the point of using an open source and free audio codec combined with an non-free one like h.264?

Might be good for music encoding but unrelated to fansubbing IMO.

since fansubbing likes open source softwares like MKV container and a better alternative to Vorbis then i say Opus can do that? or am i wrong?

We'll have to see. But as has been discussed in the other thread, most groups are using AAC directly from the transport stream. There is no quality to be gained. Exception might be Blu-Ray releases (encode lossless source to Opus). But audio codecs have been "good enough" (transparent at low bitrates) for a long time now. Saving a few bits is not worth fussing over, considering the amount of bits needed for video.
Fansubbers switched to mkv because it could properly handle H.264 (unlike AVI) + all kinds of subtitle and audio formats. It doesn't have much to do with being open source. And fansubs are illegal anyways, using free formats doesn't change that.
Also, Opus has not been properly defined for Matroska yet, and doing so is non-trivial as it poses some technical problems which can no be handled by Matroska in the current state as I've heard. People are better off not using it yet in mkv.
