I'll respectfully explain what bothers me about todays anime

Instead of being a jerk about things I'm going to calmly explain what's been bothering me about Anime and why I've been frustrated. First thing is I've been a long time fan and I feel like the Anime community in Japan doesn't care about us old school viewers. Because of this I tend to be bitter about modern Anime in Japan.

Back in the day I had Anime like Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, serial experiments lain, Evangelion, Bubbleum Crisis and many other deep Anime that had story in depth.

The men appear too softly drawn and weak in body frame. I never had a problem with this until Anime directors started using this for most of there new series.

Old school anime had more mature characters I could connect with.

I've gone through the list of most of the modern Anime and they all have that light color soft hearted feminine boy theme and random fanservice.
-Minami-Ke Tadaima = loli
-Haitai Nanafa = moe
-AKB0048 Next Stage = obsessed otaku
-Ore no Kanojo to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru = feminine boy
-Cuticle Detective Inaba = feminine again
-Maoyuu Maou Yuusha = Another anime for feminine loving boys
-Sukitte Ii na Yo = teen drama
-Medaka Box Abnormal = Yet another clean cut group of males
-Nekomonogatari = same femy
-Ai Mai Mi = moe
-Boku no Imouto wa Osaka Okan = moe
-Poyopoyo Kansatsu Nikki = moe
-Kamisama Hajimemashita = feminine looking guy

As you can see they don't care about old school Anime guys like me who enjoy normal and or masculine guys. I just feel hurt that Japan would forget about us.

Spoiler for Answerman's answer to a slightly different question:

My answer: Anime is meant for the Japanese audience... So.... just watch the old stuff I guess.

winhlp32 2013-01-06 07:57

But Japan does care about you!

Haak 2013-01-06 08:00

This must be why Psycho-Pass has been such a hit...

define your idea of deep first

Where's Tiger & Bunny and Redline and Psycho Pass? Fate/Zero has a muscular guy.

Anime industry, like any other industry priorities money over everything. Since, anime is made for Japanese audience that keep the industry afloat with their money, its their tastes that matter and not the taste of westerners.

Shows like Cowboy just might not be profitable enough for the industry to make.

Anyway, how many times has this complaint arisen of late? I remember asking the same thing a while back :p

bhl88 2013-01-06 08:05

It's the financial situation, they are stuck in negative inflation.

hyl 2013-01-06 08:07

This looks awfully similar to the ones made (atleast)a year ago about the "decline of quality anime and "lack of focus towards the western audience" kind of threads

Also all the examples are kind of stupid and out of context seeing that the genres of today's animes are different from your examples of "yesterday's animes for oldschool viewers"

Never post in frustration. You'll generally walk into some topic that's far too complex to be expressed properly in the state of mind you're in at the time.

(I wouldn't mind if there was a rule on the forum that purged all threads started from anger or frustration; bad starts are an awful way to kill a good topic)

Your points are valid, but your conclusion is lacking in depth and is too close to being simply an act of self-gratification. I'm sure you're right, but only towards your own point of view and those that share your specific point of view. To everyone else you fail to explain (just to name one issue) how exactly all of this matters? There are examples of manly men, in series such as Jojo, and older men are pretty easy to come by as long as you don't expect them to be main characters.

The reason why today you see a lot of young looking characters or "old characters" made to look young is to allow the audience to better sync with them (be it identify, relate or simply be someone they could accept to be on friendly terms).

If you want someone to blame for all this, blame all the crazy old geezers for ruining their image of mature, intelligent, authority and so forth; most importantly wisdom. Simply put, the faith today's youth puts on "experience in life" from old age, is virtually zero (if not negative; as in they believe you go crazy as you grow old), therefore you're unlikely to see prominent old looking characters unless it's some mentor figure (because those are a pure representation of authority, experience and wisdom).

bhl88 2013-01-06 08:11

She also skipped the crap old anime.... Old anime also has garbage.

You're exaggerating.

While yes, a large portion of the industry is indeed catered to pander to an otaku audience, you simply aren't grasping the sheer diversity of anime out there. Just last year, there was Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Psycho Pass, and Fate/Zero to fulfill the sort of character aesthetics you're looking for. Maybe not quite as many as before, but most likely well enough to represent the subset of the audience that prefers that sort of thing.

Now, if you're trying to say that shows today don't have any depth, then I would strongly disagree with you. Well, that would depend on how you define "depth" of course. Perhaps you're just looking at the wrong things?

bhl88 2013-01-06 08:14

I think she purposely skipped them.

hyl 2013-01-06 08:14

Ah now i remember why i saw a similar thread before, it's because it's in a way the same as his previous one that was closed

We need more badass characters with bigger balls

Traece 2013-01-06 08:41

Am I the only one who looked at all those pictures and noticed that all of the characters in the "bad" list were highschool age, and all of the characters in the "good" list were adults?

Because adult characters (and even some younger characters) in modern anime do look manly when it's an action series.

Those kind of art style are harder to find these days true, but there's still plenty around. Granted mainly in games or manga rather than shows for sure, but well, just switch to those titles then. Helps to find out about illustrators you may like and follow them too. You just need to delve deeper that's all.

This association of masculinity (or rather, a somewhat warped version of it) with "normalcy" is something I've never understood. It always leads to faulty conclusions and makes discussion more difficult for everyone.

-Necromancer- 2013-01-06 09:17

Isn't it just because their mostly teenagers? Their not supposed to be pumped full of muscles right? :o also being fragile looking ( to me atleast ) makes you connect with them more and puts more emotion into it. so more fun or sad etc :D

Chaos2Frozen 2013-01-06 09:21

Here's one thing I don't get- If there were supposedly so many great mature Animes back in the days, why is it only the same 3 or so titles that keeps getting brought up?

I mean Anime has been going on for decades right?

Coldlight 2013-01-06 09:51

Nice try, but this is just a rehash of the previous closed thread. A reformulated rant against the entirety of Japan not catering to the user's interests.

I'm sorry, but this has already been addressed more than once. Japan's anime industry makes anime for the Japanese. And the production of anime is a business.

It's adapt or die for both the Japanese companies and the non-Japanese viewers.
