Mighty No. 9 - Spiritual Mega Man Successor

Time to get this thread started! :D

So yep, the thread title says it all. Looks like my man Keiji Inafune got fed up with Capcom's crap and decided to continue Mega Man in his own way. Just look at that trailer and check out the concept arts of the robots who totally AREN'T Rock, Roll, Rush, and Cut Man!:

This is TOTALLY NOT Mega Man :meh:

Chaos2Frozen 2013-09-01 01:18

I don't know- It's looks pretty good for a "not Megaman", Megaman game...

FlareKnight 2013-09-01 01:23

I just totally love this idea. Just giving the middle finger to Capcom. "Fine you guys don't want to make a Megaman game then I'll make a game that's totally not a Megaman game, but totally is!"

Always up for more games of that fashion.

Chaos2Frozen 2013-09-01 01:29

Just like Mikami's "Evil Within" is probably also a "Totally NOT Resident Evil" game as well :heh:

Or like Platinum's Bayonetta... A lot of these ex Capcom guys are on fire :eyespin:

I especially love how the sibling robots' names are Beck and Call..... both names being just two letters shy from Rock and Roll. :p

CBredbeard 2013-09-01 01:39

I think they should use all of the concept designs for Call and integrate them into the character somehow. Like she uses a different kind of energy depending on what 'mode' she's in.

Kafriel 2013-09-01 03:08

This must be the child of Megaman and...Kirby? :heh:

At any rate, it is a good concept imo, breaking away from the current mainstream gaming styles is the way to go. Influences from other titles are always a given in the gaming industry, although this one seems a bit too heavily influenced :P

Given the recent line-up of games for the PS4, I say there's a definite move from current mainstream games ;)

Kafriel 2013-09-01 04:04

^ But those aren't "current", they're upcoming!

The main theme

You know, I'd be up for a "totally NOT Banjo-Kazooie" game from the ex-Rare guys :(

serenade_beta 2013-09-01 15:59

First Monster Hunter and now Megaman?

Destined_Fate 2013-09-01 18:40

Well this is very interesting. Wonder how it will evolve. They already have Call's design up to fan decision.

Student no.0 2013-09-01 19:08

Mega Man-like? For sure. Mega Man game? No, since we know it's not affiliated with Capcom or the Mega Man franchise in any way as you can see in the FAQ. But boy is this gonna be awesome. The video was really inspiring too.

Also, thought I'd share this article here if permitted:

Have to say I do like the whole Beck and Call naming pun :). Is a cool idea that Call's design will be up to fan decisions via a poll.

Well the left designs are too much like Roll, I think -- see blonde haired with ponytail... Which was the intent, I suppose.

Kurohane 2013-09-01 20:29

This all looks amazing. I already love the concept art for the main character. I agree with Mare Boy that the video was inspiring. I love seeing things behind the scenes, and listening to developers talk about the games they are creating.

It's not just Roll, either. That one girl-bot with the pink hair is basically Aero from the canceled Legends 3 (and considering that the artist of the Legends series is on board for this project, I highly doubt that's a coincidence). Heck, one of those designs even looks similar to Iris from the X series! :p

But putting aside character comparisons, I'm actually pretty interested in learning some more gameplay details. Judging from the concept artwork, it sorta looks like it'll combine elements from most, if not all the past MM franchises. The whole thing about stealing abilities from regular enemies in addition to bosses may bring Kirby to most people's minds, but some of the later MM games used that idea, as well (like battle chips from the EXE series, Axl's copy shot in the later X titles, or that ability Zero had in MMZ4 where he could grab certain enemies' weapons, etc.). I wonder if they'll also expand on some of the old abilities like sliding, dashing, or charge shots? I'm definitely looking forward to finding out....
