New movie "Weathering With You" announced to premiere for July (Summer) 2019. Makoto Shinkai serves the director.

Plot
Quote:

In the film's story, high school student Hodaka leaves his home on an isolated island and moves to Tokyo, but he immediately becomes broke. He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds a job as a writer for a shady occult magazine. After he starts his job, the weather has been rainy day after day. In a corner of the crowded and busy city, Hodaka meets a young woman named Hina. Due to certain circumstances, Hina and her younger brother live together, but have a cheerful and sturdy life. Hina also has a certain power: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky.

Suddenly I have something to look forward to from 2019.

MeoTwister5 2018-12-13 08:42

On board, obviously. Hopefully it gets a theatrical release in my country like Kimi no Na Wa did.

Haak 2018-12-13 09:50

Gotta love that signature Makoto Shin-Sky.

Kanon 2018-12-13 12:01

Sweet, a new Shinkai film. And we already know from the summary there will be plenty of scenery porn, with the focus on rain and the sky. Not that we needed a summary to know.

I think it's pretty much guaranteed that the boffo business Kimi no No wa did that the next Shinkai film was going to get a pretty wide theatrical release internationally.

Let it be RADWIMPS or Amazarashi doing the music please....

On another note, Shinkai is quite productive lately

Infinite Zenith 2018-12-25 01:21

I hope this one won't see an eleven-month gap between theatrical release and BDs. Nothing spells agony like the attempt to avoid spoilers from those with the means and income to fly to Japan and watch it on day one.

Sakuratsuki 2018-12-26 09:40

Saw the news a while ago, I'm looking forward to this one. If not for the story the scenery will be captivating enough to watch it.

I hope it won't be so sad. I prefer Shinkai's film to be more like "Your Name" and less like 5cm.

Infinite Zenith 2019-03-30 15:11

I hope that it won't require requisite knowledge of Japanese folklore or classical literature to fully appreciate as a certain someone asserted was "mandatory" for Kotonoha no Ni wa and Kimi no na wa. Like Shinkai's previous works, Tenki no Ko looks stunning.

Dynamic tag cannot be rendered. (PrintableThread)

But neither Kotonoha nor Kimi requires having read the Manyoushuu to appreciate? If you know it, good because you'll get the full experience. if not, you can look it up later since the main plot doesn't require knowing it

You’re correct in that it should not, but one of our number evidently thinks differently. I am rather curious to hear their thoughts at length about this upcoming film.

I'm ready for this.

No matter what will happen, I just hope that all stars will be aligned and that everyone will do her/his job to give this one a big shot at the Academy Awards. Makoto really deserves that recognition just like when Hayao Miyazaki got his.

Bring it on. I'm ready to enjoy this.

Cosmic Eagle 2019-04-09 21:13

Frickin', frickin' good. Sounds more shonen-ish than perhaps even Kimi no Na too. Should be a fun ride

Also all those old urban structures in the rain.....Going to turn me and other street photographers on so hard

Spirited Away winning was a cosmic alignment that’ll likely never happen again. For anyone not named Miyazaki just getting nominated is a minor miracle and a huge success.
