I hope it includes the original Digimon roster unlike Appmon where they are all completely new Digimon designs without the originals even appearing aside from Agumon along with his evolution's as a special guest.

Feels like it's been forever since we got a digimon series that wasn't attached to Adventures. I'm looking forward to hearing more.

GDB 2021-09-11 21:52

I wasn't looking forward to anything anime related for Digimon after the awful movies and the retconning of Adventure for no good reason, but this looks like it could be fun. And Gammamon and the silver haired dude have good voices (Miyuki Sawashiro and Akira Ishida, if I recall), so that helps.

Tokkan 2021-10-03 03:29

Watched episode 1.

Animation left a bit to be desired but this was a fun first episode. Digimon with a hint of Scooby Doo?

Faux Mecha 2021-10-03 05:54

so does this make it the second Digimon main protagonist who's not wearing googles after Masaru Daimon from Savers?

GDB 2021-10-03 09:38

This was a REALLY strong start. Good pacing, written well enough (but Digimon still gonna Digimon), Gammamon is an adorable little ****, Clockmon was an awesome opening enemy, they weaved the whole "urban legend" thing in well, and the setting was set up quite well.

I do agree with Tokkan though, the animation was very.... uh... yeah.

akumaten 2021-10-03 15:44

Gammamon has the honor of being the second virus Digimon owned by the protagonist since Guilmon with Tamers in 2001.
I'm definitely watching this show.

Wandering Soul 2021-10-03 20:34

That was a good start. Using urban legends to introduce the digimon is a nice idea

FlareKnight 2021-10-03 23:33

Definitely playing up the creepy side of this. Which I'm certainly up for. Even the original had a pretty unsettling tone at times. And that's been there in other series. So why not focus on one that plays that up?

Starts off great with that poor person getting their....life sucked right out of them. And you have a genius character who reads about that and thinks finding someone that can do that to people is a great idea. But people do things that crazy all the time when they don't really believe the stories.

I can't even feel that bad for the friend that got hit first. Something like that shows up and...picture time. Honestly I think clockmon took him down because he was annoying :heh:.

Pretty good start honestly. The main character isn't anything special, but he's not too bad. Gammamon is pretty fun. Definitely some interesting potential there. Seems like he was partially sent to Hiro so he wouldn't go down some evil route. Which may almost certainly happen for an episode or so. This seems like the kind of show where you could get that SkullGreymon moment to shake things up.

Oh, that is a surprisingly good start for a Digimon show. The episode flows pretty well with good enough characters, setting, atmosphere, plot & direction. Animation is pretty decent (which is saying a lot for Toei) and the Digimon designs are appealing.

I like the little twist for the guy that looks cool but turns out to be a huge coward when it comes to ghosts and the paranormal.

This one has potential. I hope Toei doesn't drop the ball on the way.

Digimon Ghost Game. First Thoughts

The first episode reeled me in without having too much expectations.

Felt an unconventional start to a Digimon entry into the franchise, since the main hero doesn't meet his Digimon partmer by a call of fate or twist of destiny, which I appreciated the most. Nevertheless, I will keep my expectations grounded, since it's typical of TOEI to start messing shows when they reach midway into the story.

Changing topic, so this entry's theme revolves around social media plus Japanese urban legends. I guess sooner or later Ghost Game will be portraying themes around the dangers of heeding fake news and/or following clickbaits.

For an added bonus, one of my favorite seiyuu, Akira Ishida, is voicing the cowardly senpai, and from both the logo and the OP he'll be getting soon his own digimon partner likely much to his horror and chagrin.

Fun episode. Glad they don't seem to be going with purely evil enemies the entire time, opting for some well intentioned Digimon that just had a massive misunderstanding. Also got the first of Gammamon's star-themed Champion forms; the red-colored vaccine-type BezelGammamon.

Also, we got a subtle call-out to Greymon I'm pretty sure early in the episode.

And it looks like we get the next companion next week. The setup they're going with is what I expected the guy to have with Jellymon, since it seems HIGHLY likely that the source of his trauma is being followed/"haunted" by Jellymon for a while and thinking it's a legit ghost.

Wandering Soul 2021-10-10 17:21

Yeah, I'm glad that the enemy Digimon actually a motivation than just wreaking havoc and was actually trying to help in his own way.

I'm starting to grow fond of Ghost Game due that the writers are injecting an unconventional approach to the Digimon generic formula. Haven't seen this kind of freshness in a Digimon show since the Digimon Tamers era from 20 years ago.

For the time being the wandering Digimon either have misguided motivations or completely misunderstand the nuances of the human world which delivers gravitas into their deeds.
They're not acting purely on the dichotomy of light vs. darkness trope, leaving the door open for Hiro to actually persuade them to reform their ways on their own.
Of course, still we need digivolutions and battles, because that's the mainstream that sells in each entry into the mega-franchise.

Still, I'm keeping my expectations grounded and will continue watching the series to see how and where it heads by the time it reaches the 13th episode; keeping fingers that it won't regress to the TOEI formulaic and generic tropes.

Second episode was pretty good. Although I did feel a bit mixed with the conclusion. I like the idea of an opponent not being totally evil and just misguided. But at the same time...this was Gammamon's first evolution. It kind of feels underwhelming to have him evolve and not actually do much of anything. He got a shot off, but it wasn't like Mummymon was out of the fight. The attack seemed to barely inconvenience him. Creating an opening to talk down an opponent is a cool idea. But I wonder if it wasn't better suited to saving it for another episode. At this point they've actually defeated nobody. Clockmon just escaped in episode 1 and Mummymon was talked down in episode 2. Is this going to be a Digimon series where they don't completely defeat anyone?

It was an episode with some cool elements. And I appreciate changing things up in terms of how they are handling conflicts and holding steady on the horror type elements. Some scary stuff continues to unfold which is good. And I appreciate the MC trying to dig into the truth while not having a lot of luck with Gammamon knows...very little. So it encourages investigation if for no other reason than to learn about where his father is.

Hoo...second episode is even better than the previous one.
  • We get proper bonding between Hiro & Gamma.
  • We get Digimon of the week with proper misguided motivation.
  • The senpai is still the caring coward who is more interesting.
  • The girl who is obsessed with the holo-ghost doing silly & eccentric stuffs in front of real mummies :heh:
  • We get the digi-volution & battle, and I like how the name & information of the attack flashed in Hiro's head so that he knew what command that he needed to give to his Digimon.
  • I like that the enemy Digimon is "redeemed" via talk & reasoning instead of being obliterated. It was a scary Digimon too which is cool to see him be a somewhat good guy. He wasn't evil originally as has been shown that he was willing to answer Hiro's questions before they fought.
  • Aaaand turns out the silly girl already has her own Digimon. A good hook to follow next episodes.
  • Also, I have to say, for a Toei Digimon show, the direction remains good & atmospheric. Looks like Masashi Sogo's script is also working so far.

Gammamon vs Clockmon: Rookie vs Champion
BezelGammamon vs Mummymon: Champion vs Perfect

It'd honestly be BS if he actually "won" either fight.

Obelisk ze Tormentor 2021-10-24 10:03

Well, despite some animation hiccups, the show still continue its streak of good episodes. The horror/thriller aspect still going strong and the major focus on Ruli this episode is great.

I like that Angoramon is intelligent and can read the situation. But forgiving Dracumon is a huge mistake and I'm glad that the episode highlighted it at the end. Hiro & Ruli & the digimons got tricked when Dracumon gave them his "eyes". Looks like they didn't know that he can grow them back again (neither do I, until the end of the ep). So I can't really blame them too much.

Side Note: why are there so many close-up shots?? Did they really think that such shots will look good on widescreen TV? Like seriously, all the close-up shots made me think that this show is designed to be watched on phones instead of TV
