10 overused cliches in Anime

I have been watching animes for quite some time and I have a deep respect for them. However after watching two fine old 80's anime, (legend of the Galactic Heros and Rose of Versailles) it made me find out that anime storylines in general have been having sort of a slump in creativity. None of these cliches are bad by themselves, and in fact lots of them are what make lots of anime series special still I hope anime in general will start getting off thier asses in the creativity department so here is my list in no particular order.

10. Im hoping this aint true but .... Every third working Salaryman in Japan can't Possibly be a skirt lifting pervert!!!
Sure Porn is generally regaurded as a acceptable passtime in Japan, but isn't that supposed to make them less horny during the day? Obviously not according to anime. The only reason for hot chick to walk across the street or take the subway is so they can be accosted by another no name collared pervert and in turn to be rescued by some sort of teenage hero.
Greatest Culprit in recent memory: Tenshi na Konomiki (every 5th episode is another pervert)

9.Japanese: The ultimate survivors ..... errr, not really!
Japanese manga writers are thoroughly convinced that in case of holocost, alien invasion, or demonic invasion, japan will be the only country left standing. Sure they got alotta pluck holding their islands as they showed us in WWII but mostly it was a lost cause. GET OFF YOURSELVES ALREADY! enjoy some new vistas! You dont even need to kiss up to the evil Americans! Here are 3 nations that got some REAL grit.
Russians: They stopped 2 megalomaniacs from taking their country. First Napolean, then Hitler. They didnt even win through tactical genius or superior technology. They won through blood spent, pure and simple.
Britain: Showed us that Quality always beats quantity by spanking two great "Armadas" first in sea when faced up against the spanish armada, then in the air by stopping the German Luftwaffle in the greatest air battle in history. Always outnumbered, never out spirited.
Arabs: Did you know that the middle east used to be green untill wars raveged the landscape permanently? Well the people still live there, and for the most part, they are still fighting.
Greatest Culprit in Recent Memory: Gunparade March (the world tries nukes on aliens then promptly expires except for japan)

8. Earths Greatest Weapons will be weilded by our children .... IF WE WERE ALL FREAKING NUTS.
There never was, never is, and never will be a time when we will create a super weapon to be piloted only by 13 year olds. I'm sorry, but it aint gonna happen. We can barely get by the thought of giving our 13 year olds paintball guns and we sure as hell aint gonna teach um responsiblity by giving them a 50 ton 10 story large robot that can level cities in a single missle salvo! Im sorry, it just aint gonna happen no matter how amazing these children may or may not be!
Greatest Culprit in Recent Memory: Sokyuu no Fafner (13 year olds with lots of angst no less pilot mystical robots)

7.Lets go off to fairy tale land!!!
Alice in Wonderland is sometimes compared to an extremely long and surreal acid trip. So when I see another pre adolescent get transported to another fairy tale land I grimace a little and when I hear the words "never never land" I only can think of Micheal Jackson. Honestly Mangakas, it's time to stop! (this point includes fanciful underground worlds invisible to the real world, I'm talking to you Tokyo Underground)
Greatest Culprit in Recent Memory: Inuyasha (After ranama the creator had a chance to create something truly origional .... he didn't!)

6.Japan has the most toughest gangsters in organized school history!!!
Kind of hard to beleive considering people kill themselves over failed college exams in Japan. If there is anything we know in America, it's that little aisian kids wearing gangster colors, rapping, and swearing their heads off is only one thing: DAMN FUNNY! It was pretty novel to see rough and tough japanese kids back in the day, like in Slam Dunk, but I think the jig is up already and this particular cliche should be put to rest.
Greatest Culprit in Recent Memory: Midori no Hibi (main character beats up gangsters from other schools constantly, apprently they are all just wussbags, HEY JUST LIKE REAL LIFE)

5.Americans in the future are all self absorbed, insensitive, and power hungry!
Cmon I don't need you guys to kiss up to us but as an American, it's disturbing to see people think that we are gonna go the way of the Dodo in the near future. Heck we get enough flack from AMERICAN sci-fi writers as it is. If american somehow does manage to survive we are always trying to cover things up or masscring civilians. Puhleeze Japan, stop acting like the ethnic purgings in Africa are that much more bearable than our screw ups just because we are embarrased about it and they are not! (And you know in reality you love us Japan, and WE LOVE YOU!)
Greatest Culprit in recent Memory: Ghost In the Shell: Standalone Complex (the americans appear in the 1st season twice, and they both aren't glowing reviews)

4.The human body is the most effecient design for future military vehcles!
There is a reason why planes, subs, spacecraft, cars are shaped the way they are. It's because it's the most efficient design for the task they built for. The human body is horribly inefficient, and the only reason we stand on 2 legs was because it frees our hands to do other things, NOT because it allows us to fly, swim, or even travel on land more efficiently. So it is laughable from a design standpoint to see large man shaped robots as the kings of the battlefield. Lets see something truly magnificent and strange in military technology.
Greatest Culprit in recent Memory: Kenran Butoh Sai (If there is anyplace where design is important to increase mobility its IN THE WATER!)

3.Aliens don't just look like humans, THEY ARE ALSO DAMN HOT!!
Look in live action sci-fi shows, the reason all aliens look human is because it's damn expensive to make them look like anything else. I mean in star trek it's alot cheaper to put someone in a rubber costume than make a completely computer generated or animatronic main character alien not to mention the fact that if you dont have a monstrous budget this particular character would look like complete crap next to their real life counterparts. BUT THIS IS ANIMATION. If there is any place to make cool alien characters that REALLY LOOK ALIEN, its in Anime and if it's possible ... please make the most horrendous looking one the GOOD GUY rather than the BAD GUY for a change. This is just a case of complete lapse of creativity.
Greatest culprit in recent memory:WOW i cant think of any at the moment, maybe i can have a little back up in this area, I'm pretty sure it's true though, if not, let me just say i was really grabbing at ideas by this point to reach my goal of 10!

2.Whats better than a sexy hero? A HAREM OF SEXY HEROS!
I'm sorry, this particular cliche is especially disturbing becuase frankly even I dig it sometimes. I mean they are sexy and already half dressed......the only next step to REALLY please the fans is to make them all open lesbiens with eachother (they would all have to be lesbiens because we already have animes where just one of the group has acute homosexual tendencies). Let's just take a tiny step backwards here ... boys can be heros too after all! AS A MALE I DEMAND EQUAL RIGHTS!!!!
Greatest culprit in recent memory:Divergence EVE (Look at them, I MEAN JUST LOOK AT THEM ... oh GAWD stop staring will ya?)

1.Japanese History is the only history worth exploring!
This brings me back to old 80's anime. From an old family friend who went to Japan, he said that in the 80s there was a heavy fascination with European culture which is easily refelected in their Anime's. Instead of using that to explore other cultures, like perhaps obscure African or south American folk stories and histories. Animes has actually regressed into, ITS ALL ABOUT JAPAN. Frankly ive been really getting into those film festivals where they showcase foreighn hits. There is some damn good stuff out there, its just a matter of finding them and then putting a good anime spin to it.
Greatest culprit in recent memory:Samurai Champloo (yet another timeless classic in Japanese fuedal period, OH BOY!)

Whoah, I hope you enjoyed my rant. Frankly I liked most of the animes I mentioned. Still as I watch more animes, the similar cliches are becoming more and more obvious. There are probably things that are completely wrong in this list as it is my own impressions on the state of anime and manga stories in general and I havent really watched all of the animes in the world so i cant really be a good critic of them. Still I hope most people agree with at least half of my points and hopefully got a few good laughs out of it too.

If you have any cliches to add that would be cool too!

mememe 2004-08-02 04:49

i have one more thing to add to your list.
how they fight the bad guy for a couple of eps (or a season) and then kill him or make him a good guy then the next eps another bad guy appears and they do the same with him and then a next one. come on how bout some assortment or some eps when they are recovering from the last bad guy just to make the show interesting we don't always want to see good and evil fighting and we don't want to see good always win.
Salior moon is the worst one for this and so is PC.
interesting how the shoujo anime does this and the others don't

I totally agree with #8, since I have noticed it too. If the doom is coming (and I don't mean Doom 3), or some huge megalo-sized robot needs a driver, they let out the teens. Always 15-years old. Always. :heh:

You forgot only one:

11) If there is a harem, it's the shy guy who gets to lead it. Okay, but when the fellow gets blasted to the orbit every now and then by a bunch of wimpy women and does not even get the idea when boobs are fed down his throat, I would be worried if he was missing something between his legs. :p Love Hina, Onegai Teacher, and Oh! My Goddess! come to mind easily. I mean: holy jesus! In OMG the hero has 4 Żber-sexy, practically LWO-welcoming goddesess (literally) in his bed, at times in his bath, and still the hero goes like "WAAAH! I'LL CRAP MY PANTS NOW!" :heh:

(L like "Legs", W like "Wide..." You can guess what the last word is. ;) )

Just wish they even ONCE made the hero take the iniative and grasp what is being offered. Hope Green Green has the guts...

KirbyMorph 2004-08-02 09:54

Your a typical American, that's for sure. Go watch Fox or something for 5 minutes. Tell me how much non-American history / culture is showed. None. American television is lucky enough to have the token 'black guy' show up for an episode of a show let alone display another culture. Take Friends. All white people in New York doing American things. Look at the Justice League cartoon. Green Lantern is a black guy because they thought having an all white Justice League would be racist and bad publicity. (GL is Kyle Raynor, a white guy in the comics, at least at the time of the JL cartoon being launched). There are no Asians on the team or even Europeans for reference. Ever watch Ninja Turtles? Ya, they were ninjas. Thats all the influence from Japan they needed. The rest was American cliches like Cowabunga and it was set in New York. Not once did they ever leave NY.

You talk about the tough looking Japanese gang kids. Have you ever watched an American teenage drama set in school? Ever see the nerds getting beat up by the jocks? Wow, not cliched at all.

What history does America learn in school besides US history? None. What books do they read in literature classes that arent American in origin (Shakespeare doesnt count)? None. Finally, what television shows have anything but American pop culture references or history in them? You dont like the fact Japan might want to teach their people/children about their history through media? Then why the hell does America have like 800 'epic' war movies ranging from their utter defeat in Vietnam (which every movie pretty much makes out like they won it) and the WW2 movies that makes America look great when they were the ones who sat on the sidelines and didnt bother helping until they themselves got attacked. Bravo on 'teaching' with those movies. Lets go watch the Patriot for another historical 'epic'. Where does Japan get off making Samurai stuff anyways? Its not like it was part of their culture until the 19th century or anything.

You think its weird they have Japan as the surviving country or world leader or whatever in their shows? Ever watch any movies in America? Lets go with something like Independencce Day. Wow, the US just happens to be the leader of the world. They are the only ones with half a clue to take down the enemies and basically save everyones ass. Right. Armegeddon is pretty much the same way. Oh the drama. Im not even gonna bother listing the countless other examples of America being the most dominant force on the planet in movies.

So, it's just like America in the past and present then? Maybe if you drop another nuke on the country, they might stop having this weird dislike for Americans.

Burner of Anime 2004-08-02 10:07

You forgot old school super robot final gasp super-critical monster surefire kill attack [phew, that was a long one :heh:] Keep wondering why they don't come out with the big gun First and just kill the sucker the moment the gunsights get a lock. But no, melee is sooo much cooler...

The thing is, I'm not too worried about the setting rarely coming out of Japan. For one thing, most of the time anime is made refering to other countries is when foreign investment is quite high. Case in point, the Read or Die OVA's female lead is part British and is actually in the employ of that country [also one of the most expensive titles made in the last 5 years]. There's also Gunslinger Girl, Kaleidostar, Monster, Yugo, Miami Guns, the upcoming Count of Monte Cristo, Chrono Crusade, Steamboy and the new Poirot/Marple anime adaptation- all these have settings out of Japan as well. I have more to add, but this'll be one very long list :p

Bear in mind that while the foreign market for anime is growing, it still cannot match local demand [as well as those of countries closer to them]. Japanese animation is made to cater to their nationals in their own language and with their own unique and alien culture- applying what we consider "normal" and in good taste across the board isn't exactly fair now is it?

bunnykun 2004-08-02 10:25

KirbyMorph, i agree with you.

How do you know what aliens look like? Are they suppose to be pale white big skinny headed creatures? Or some octopus 8 headed creature? Seriously the universe is infinetely big there are bound to be hot aliens or aliens dressed up as hot aliens? Brainwashed by the media.

jennwenn 2004-08-02 12:07

There are too many overused cliches to name! :heh:

I don't think the original poster was necessarily saying American entertainment never uses cliches and only anime does. This is an anime forum, so of course he or she would talk about anime cliches.

Kensuke 2004-08-02 12:07

12) In harem/fanservice anime, there is always a beach or onsen (hot spring) episode.

We western people have got this alien thing all wrong. Why spend money on plastic looking masks or more expensive CGI in live action movies, or draw aliens for cartoons that will look even more unrealistic, when you can have an alien race of cute looking girls. :D

GHDpro 2004-08-02 12:55

13) in 90% of all animes, (one of) the main characters has lost one or both parents (dead).

Anime that fits in above category as an example (totally random order):

- Neon Genesis Evangelion
- Kaleido Star
- Martion Successor Nadesico
- Jubei-chan
- Battle Athletes Victory
- Ai Yori Aoshi
- Card Captor Sakura
- Princess Nine
- Tenchi Muyo!
- Happy Lesson
- Naruto
- Full Metal Alchemist
- Uninhabited Planet Survive
etc. etc.

In anime warriors are kinda stupid.
-> Instead of just kicking the crap out of their enemy they always cry out which special move they are gonna make next before hitting the enemy

In anime the opposing warriors are even dumber :heh:
-> Instead of fighting the other guy, they always politely wait untill he has finished screaming his battle move, then reacts too late. C'mon any decent bad guy would've taken his gun and shot the dude while he was screaming battle moves :p

For Example : <insert random anime here>

molotov_sp 2004-08-02 13:35

I am a typical American, and I'd be the first to tell you that American media sucks alotta ass most of the time. Orange County made me laugh so hard because all the characters were white caucasians. Look, when I watched old 80's anime i realized that there was a time where Japan was really exploring strange vistas that I don't even see in America. It surprised me and I really digged it. It's sad to say this trend go away for the sake of ultra mass appeal. Besides, it's not like I'm criticising them. Fuedal Era Japan is damned cool! No better place to have massive bloodshed. Still I'd be very exceited to see some remake of a classic anime take on say the Homer or Iliad. Wouldn't you?

Kaigeman 2004-08-02 17:56

Always tends to be just ONE guy all the girls like to fall for. At least throw in another guy for some differences.

Onegai Teacher was at least cool for that, a different guy than the main character actually got a girlfriend. Nice!

---

Most of what the U.S. learns history-wise depends on the locale of where you live in and what type of school. From what I've seen (through personal experience, since I've moved around). The closer you get to the more population-heavy areas, the higher the focus on a broader world history to encompass the variety of people. I was always disappointed we never went to deep into the Norse stuff though in my school :\

Found books in the library though! :)

Come on... for example apes have like.. what? 98% of our genes? And do they look human... or HOT? :twitch: Now if there is something alien, how's the chance for it to look human?...

I have to agree with molotov on most points, except point 10.
Ok the ones where he rants about Japan being the center of anime are kind of useless, because we all know that animes are... japanese (right?) so what did you expect??? :uhoh:

And he even said that those things arent necessarily negative.

Sakaki 2004-08-02 18:15

You have to blame the original Star Trek show for that. :p

Of course it might have been interesting to see Kirk trying to hit on a octopus every week. :heh:

Way to cover up any good point you could have made with an anti-american rant.
While you are right in pointing out that a series made in country 'x' for viewing in country 'x' will use cultural reference from country 'x', you continued into a pointless rant. Does America hype their involvement in ww2? Yes, but can you honestly say other countries on the winning side don't do the same? just like japan and germany like to downplay their roles in the war. The US didn't get involved until attacked because people here didn't want to get involved in a war. Can you really blame someone for that? Also, excpet of the navy, the US really didn't have much of a military at the time. The thinking was a strong navy will keep the coast safe from invasion, and for anything else we can just draft people. I'd continue, but you can easily do a search and find another thread that discusses stuff like this. I will say though, I consider selling destroyers to the british, sending vast amounts of war supplies, and even taking over convoy escort for half the trip across the atlantic, all at a time when the US was supposed to be neutral, helping out. In fact that would have been more than enough justification for germany to legally declar war on the US in 1939 or 40. Not that germany was concerned with international law at the time...

True enough. the worst is that this guy/girl that everyone falls in love with never got the best personality ever and there is always a character that is more interesting but got no girl/boyfriend because she/he is not the hero.

The thing that i hate about american movie would be a thread to talk about cliche in american movie maybe we should make one in the general chat...
