Studio Ghibli Collection

I was wondering if this was some sort of bootleg only mishmash, or if there is an officially released collection out there? I'd really like to get all of these movies at once (hopefully at less than 20 dollars a piece), but I don't want to buy some horrible quality bootleg version (I bought one in Shanghai while I was in China and it was terrible, I ended up taking it back...).

Forbin 2006-04-21 15:37

There isn't at this time.

Disney doesn't even own all the titles (Like Only Yesterday or Ocean Waves) so it's $29 a piece at Best Buy for you :(

So if you do find one, it's a bootleg.

Edit : There is a Laser Disc version of all the Good old Robotech Version of the dubs (Carl Macek BTW). But who the HECK has a Laser Disc?

physics223 2006-04-21 19:42

Ocean Waves. I really digged that movie. I liked the subtlety ... and of course the soundtrack. My favorite Ghibli flick.

raphaŽl 2006-04-23 17:47

out there?

Sorry, but what do you mean by "out there"? lol
Forbin seems like he understood, but i don't. Are you talking about America? (I'm french, don't blame me! :p )

And physics, if you have time, open a thread on "Ocean Waves" (i don't know if there's one open already) and tell us what you liked about it. Because it's the only ghibli i found somehow boring, though the location is very interesting (not every movie takes place in Shikoku, right? :) )

I saw a DVD collection box(11 movies) at yesasia.com, here's the link

bayoab 2006-04-23 18:14

The one above that is linked to is the only official collection that exists. There is not even one in Japan. You can confirm on http://www.nausicaa.net/ that it is legit.

According to Nausicaa there are 4.

The Chinese DVD version with 11 disks 2000 Piece run $250
The Chinese VCD version with 10 Disks (Who the heck approved this?)
The American Non Disney LD version from 1996 (Does anyone have an LD?)
The Special 10 VHS tape case for people who bought all 10 at once. (Wow VHS!)

To Raphael.

Hmmm Ocean waves was nice...not as good as Whisper of the Heart but it was nice. It suffered too much from plot jumps. I found Only Yesterday the real yawner.

raphaŽl 2006-04-24 09:51

why?

Really? I loved it! I almost cry everytime i watch it!
Forbin, i think we need to talk. :p
Let's open a thread (again? lol)

Well, at least we agree on Whisper of the heart. ^^

Anyway, thanks for all the infos!

Grave of the Fireflies is easy to find online.

Grave of the Fireflies at DVDPacific for example.

There have been two recent releases, July 2004 and the Collector's Edition from August 2002.

SpiritedSen 2006-05-09 15:34

Cheers dude, but the one I'm looking for is Number 10 in the new Studio Ghibli Collection (the series with the silver banner at the top and a number on the spine, 13 dvd's in all). I'm not even sure if No.10 is G.O.T.F, hence I'm hoping sum1 here knows. I was told they were re-issuing the 2-disc special edition with the new 'Collection' packaging.

Someone has said to me that Number 10 might be Only Yesterday whwn it is released. Does anyone have any thoughts on that? :)

Considering that a 13 disk set is probably a bootleg and you are looking for #10?

SpiritedSen 2006-05-16 15:13

It's not a boxset, 13 dvd's have been released by Optimum Asia, and are for sale in every store in Britain. They are all under the heading 'The Studio Ghibli Collection', and have a silver banner at the top of the box with that written in itm and they have a number from 1-13 on the spine. I assume as u didn't know that, u must not be from the U.K. I have numbers 1,2,4,5,6,7,8,9,11,and 12, and know what 3 and 13 are, but no.10 is a mystery. :)

All you need have done is google "Optimum Asia Ghibli" and you would have found your answer.

Optimum Asia

Here is the list of the planned releases (details here).

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
The Cat Returns
Porco Rosso
Pom Poko
Kiki's Delivery Service
Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Howl's Moving Castle
Princess Mononoke
My Neighbour Totoro
My Neighbours the Yamadas
Whisper of the Heart
Only Yesterday (October release)
Spirited Away
Grave of the Fireflies

And it would have helped if you mentioned you were looking (in the U.K.) for this particular release in the first place. Also, I can't say I've seen any of these in any store in the U.K. but then I wasn't looking out for them :) I tend to pick up the U.S. releases (which are cheaper even when shipped across to the U.K.)

SpiritedSen 2006-05-16 16:33

On the Optimum Asia website, it doesn't say which number is on the spine (that was obviously the first place I looked). As you can see, Only Yesterday is not on that site, and they only have the old G.O.T.F. Again, the other site you showed me does not have numbers, and just seems to be a review page. I was told by peeps on another forum that G.O.T.F would be number 10, but I couldn't find any info on it, hence my posting in this forum. Someone then suggested that O.Y would be 10, but there is no direct info on that either. I was just concerned that I would end up with an incomplete collection.

For Pete's Sake, if you know this much you can work out the missing number 10 for yourself.

And again, how about you tell us what you do know beforehand so we can stop wasting our time trying to help.

It might be "obvious" to you but we are not mind-readers, how are we meant to guess you know about this site (but couldn't be bothered to let us know that you know).

The Optimum Asia site does tell you the Catalogue Number of the DVDs so you can work out what's missing yourself.

SpiritedSen 2006-05-16 18:17

You guys are mean!! :( I was only asking, chill!! Sorry if I annoyed u all, but it's the first time i've been on a forum...i didn't know i was meant to say where i was from the U.K or anything. :upset: i knew it was either O.Y or G.O.T.F, i just wanted to know if anyone knew anything definate, you didn't have to be so horrible about it.

xris 2006-05-17 04:57

Sigh, if you want people to try and help, please start off by helping them. Anyway, it's not that difficult to find the answer for yourself using Google.

Here is your answer, found posted on another message board, here.
