Myself; Yourself - Game Discussion
 
This thread is meant to discuss the upcoming Myself ; Yourself PS2 game, which should be out for sale on december 2007.

At this point of time, we've had commercials, trailers, samples cgs and such. From now on, please discuss them on this thread only, as they will considered spoilers in the anime only episode threads, and treated as such.

Of course, for everything related to Myself ; Yourself game (plot, routes, developments, comparison with the anime once the game is out, etc.etc.), this is the right place.

That all depends on which PS3 model you purchase. Different models like the 40 GB version have no PS2 backwards compatibility... but that's getting off-topic. You can't play import PS2 games on a PS3 anyway (at least not yet).

Ok so it's on the ps2 then the chances of it getting an English release is close to zero. Since it isn't on the PC the chances of it getting a fan translation is close to zero. Wewt?

The art looks great. That it's getting a ps2 release isn't bad. Since there are way more people on a ps2 then on a ps3 and graphic wise the ps3 wouldn't be that much nicer.

It's a logical choice for Visual Novel developers to go for the ps2. When the developers have enough money and want to step it up a notch with a lot cut scene's(like school days) the ps3 would be very interesting.

I want to play it, but I never will.

Well in Australia... PS2 is 140 dollars.... the PS3 New Version (no PS2 compatability, smaller hdd) is around 699? The problem with PS3 is that most of the awesome games aren't out yet. PS2 is proven, and also its every Otaku's mainstay hehehe... I say that cos Konata has one :P


Just on the issue of visual novels.... is Clannad the only one that is being/has been translated into English?

I know VN like School Days would be very difficult to do because of the amount of animation... hold on, is Myself Yourself a PS2 only launch? or will it go to PC?

Huh? hell no, there are a LOT of VN already translated, either commercially (Ever17, phantom of inferno, etc) or fantranslated (Tsukihime, Fate/Stay Night (Fate Route), planetarian, etc)

Clannad is by far one of the most recent translation project, that's all.

School Days won't be that hard, it is rather a matter to actually find a way to edit the subtitles feature (build in the game). Once you get the trick, you just need to translate the helluva big amount of text, and timing it + proofreading/test.

As for MY, it is only planned oN PS2 for the moment.

I wouldn't say a lot. It's pretty much a fraction of the total. Most of the fan translations are far from completed(rather then far just plain inactive). Most of the VN that is released in English aren't really the ones I'm all hyped up about. I think we are around whopping 20 something of VN available in english. And to think also a part of them are pretty much hardcore porn(no not just as rewards just straight up wtf-ness).

I think we can all pretty much agree that the market for english translated VNs is close to nil. It's a damn shame too. I tend to enjoy a good VN even more than I do a good anime. Sadly, it's just not marketed enough. The only commercially translated VNs I've played are Ever17 , Hourglass of Summer, Phantom of Inferno and Kana Imouto. Everything else has been fan translated and frankly, there just isn't enough of either. Fan translations are rare because they take so much time and effort so there is only so much a single group can do. Commercial translations aren't any better because the lack of a good market in the U.S. and other anglophonic nations. I wonder if somewhere down the road we can get VNs with multilingual settings, kind of like a DVD. The production costs would be higher, as well as the game's development timeframe, but the market for the game would be SOO much bigger. I don't really see it happening but I think it's a good idea.

"a lot" was used in a context that VN are clearly for a niche public. Considering the market, it is already surprising to see that some companies are actually daring to translate and sell them (Himareki, most likely).

That said, it is better than nothing, and be aware that many non japanese, non english speakers would kill to get at least some VN already.

The problem isn't even the development, but rather the risk and if the measure is actually worthy.
They would at least need a supporting company in the exportation, otherwise, translating with other languages is moot. why? Well, who would actually bother to import them? Not so much already.

The market requires some fame, as most people obviously don't know the potential of VN at all. (as anime is already fine, though there are still some prejudice and lame stereotypes aposed on it).


meh... back on the topic, it would be interesting to see how you can actually switch between Sana and Shuusuke (or will they do something like 2 different main routes? not really much information on it i guess)

I agree, unfortunately enough. There was a project to bring the Galaxy Angel games over into the states, but that's been stalled forever, and I don't see any hope so far of the project ever being restarted. (thankfully, I can read and understand Japanese and have JP game-playing capability on my PS2 :) )

Well, the master copy's done and it's well before the original release date set for November, so I'm guessing the delay to December was for marketing reasons (perhaps waiting for the anime to finish ?).

By my observation, Japanese game publishers tend to finish everything one month in advance. For instance, all of Square Enix's projects have been scheduled this way (including their recent Nintendo DS games).

I'm not sure if this schedule is required by the hardware manufacturers (i.e. SCEI, NCL), but it's a big difference from the American PC game industry, where developers sometimes rush together a (buggy) master disc just a week from release.
