I've heard that the storyline of the manga was different from the anime, if so whereabouts eg beginning, ending, etc. And also if it is different, from what vol onwards does the storyline change??

With regards to Love Hina.
For me, the manga is much better because it offered many other side events.
Basically, the anime show removed some side events and only focused on the main plot of the story. Also, the manga covered the ending for the series :)

GTO anime compresses a lot of events, so some great things get left out. I really enjoy the manga but I didn't think the anime was anywhere near as good.

Basically the animes for both series just skipped over the parts
of the mangas that were either side stories or didn't focus on
the main character(s). A shame since the side stories are very
ammusing for both series.

in love hina they threw in some filler like new characters and some stuff that does nothing for the story.

Same thing. They start cutting material with the very first episode. GTO is a very long manga series too...

The GTO anime ended production before the manga was even finished, it's only natural the two would end differently.

Could somone please give me the end of the GTO anime (in spoilers brackets). I own the 25 volumes of the manga, and don't have any plans to watch the anime, however I'm curious as to what kind of ending they did for it.

I read the Love Hina manga before i saw the anime. And the anime is just a compressed version of the manga, guess there would be well over a 100 episodes if they keep with the manga. But it's fun watching Keitaro getting punched animated.

i have no idea how the spoiler tag in this forum works so STOP READING IF U DNT WANT SPOILERS
Spoiler:
yeh well the anime ends when onizuka takes the blame for that teacher killing himself/some say myabi did kill him, yeh well the whole attemp was to get myabi to say 'sorry' and admit that she was wrong to onizuka, and when she did onizuka tried to run away from the cops. You than see him riding his bike in the US and he ends up teaching in California high
P.S. [spioler]This is how to use the spoiler tag, but just spell spoiler correctly :)[/spioler]

The Love Hina anime pretty much follows the manga but it leaves out alot. Also some stories are changed a little (one example is the fact that Shinobu is allready in Hinata House at the start in the manga while she gets introduced in the Anime in the 2nd episode). In general the timeline is respected.
In order to appreciate the OVA and Love Hina Again it is better to have read the manga because otherwise they come dropping out of the sky and seem rather out-of-place. Also it's alot more clear who Keitaro's "girl-of-promise" is in the manga. Expect more character development in the manga as well.
About the ending: The anime ends with Love Hina Again and the ending of it is different from the one in the manga. In the manga these events take place in book nr 12. The manga continues after that (with one of the most hilarious books (nr 13) of all imo :heh:) for 2 more volumes.
PS The manga is a zillion times better then the anime and Motoko is the greatest :D !!!

Well, that is not exactly what happened, but here goes:
Spoiler:
in a nut shell, all of the stuff that was mixed, left in, or partially left out/changed in the anime is volume 1-13 of the mangas and up to chapter/lesson 107 of volume 14. Everything in the manga lesson 108 to the end was totally left out and was instead, "replaced" (if you could call it that) with a totally different looped in order to end the TV series even though the mangas were not finished at the time. So, they made a new ending.
Now, what was changed after that on the final loop was that Miyabi was apparantly able to find the teacher that betrayed the class (please note, this is a new changed character, not the original one that was mentioned in the manga considering that he was not introduced until after volume 14 in the manga). What happened is that the teacher was stabbed and neared death's door. Miyabi than disappeared for a while in shock and the class and Onizuka try to find Miyabi in order to see if she had stabbed the old homeroom teacher. The students explained to Onizuka that what happened in the past that started the whole class rebelion was that the teacher was secretly seeing one of his female students, who was Miyabi's best friend at the time. The teacher and the female student were in love with each other, but the school staff found out about their relationship and the Japanese Educational Council Board held a secret reception in order to discuss what they should do since he was seeing his fellow student. They said that the student would be expelled from school and that the teacher would have to deny to his homeroom that he had nothing to do with her and be transfered to another school. The students got outraged because the teacher did not stand up to defend Miyabi's friend, especially since the friend had cared for the teacher more than anyone else in the class. Afterwards, Miyabi's friend committed suicide, but no one knows why (and all blame was put on the homeroom teacher, hence the start of the rebeling).
Later, Miyabi was able to find one of the members of the education council and threatened to blame him for what happened to her friend, and scared the crap out of the guy from the council (there was a report on the news about the stabbing incident and that a student is most likely the main suspect, that being Miyabi). She still had the knife that the old homeroom teacher was stabbed with and was walking up to the council member until Onizuka stopped her and took her away (the council member argued that Miyabi should be blamed for nearly killing him as well as stabbing her old homeroom teacher; but of course, Onizuka defended her and says that it doesn't matter if he (the council member) does and that he will defend her (to which point, the council guy said he will blame the school for having a bad teacher and so forth, which then he would go back to see the other members of the council, all bandaged up and an arm sling... but he never really got injured at all, and the council talked about blaming the school to the point of closing it down in order for the council to save their own hides).
Onizuka took Miyabi to his cop friend's post to lock her up in order to protect her from going out again (to avoid more properganda). At this point, Onizuka was told what really happened to the old homeroom teacher (either by Miyabi or someone else, I can't remember who) that when Miyabi went to her old friend's grave, her friend's mother saw Miyabi and recognized her, which led her to explain what happened to her daughter. Aparantly, Miyabi's friend wanted to protect her homeroom teacher/lover from being expelled from teaching, so she decided to leave school; but, there was still evidence that would connect the teacher having an affair with the student because she was pregnant, so she killed herself in order to protect the homeroom teacher. In a twist (as Miyabi found him earlier bringing the knife and all), the teacher did not know that she committed suicide in order to protect him, so he blamed himself for everything that happened and grabbed the knife from Miyabi's hand and he tried to commit suicide himself in forgiveness for everything that has happened. Onizuka hears this and turns his attention toward protecting her and the school. He comes to a meeting in which the council would close the school (school gets blamed for Miyabi's incident with the "death stabbing" and Onizuka being a bad teacher, so the council blames the staff, but the staff blames the whole incident on the council for doing nothing but saving their own asses and not caring for the children as they should (and everyone backs up Onizuka, including the Vice Principal). The council was also hoped that the old homeroom teacher would die, leaving all ties of everything that the council did in the past.
Onizuka brings a whole bunch of news groups to the school and the police. The rest of the students went out and found some additional information that the council was hiding and tried to bring it to school in order to save Onizuka and the school, but then Onizuka says that he stabbed the old homeroom teacher and was arrested, but not before reveiling other secrets that the council members were holding from the public. The members deny this, but the old homeroom teacher has awakened from his injuries at a hospital and some news crews head for the hospital in order to get the story from him. Onizuka gets arrested for the stabbing and as he is taken away, Miyabi was walks in (she earlier demanded to Oni's cop friend that she be taken to the school in order to stop the incident) and sees that Onizuka is being taken away. Onizuka says don't worry about him since she has pleanty of other friend to take care of her... which let Miyabi scream out Onizuka's name as she is crying, telling him to come back and that she is sorry(she now accepts him, hence forth ending the class's feud towards homeroom teachers). This in turn leaves Onizuka running from the cops ("I didn't stab him!!! Why don't you go ask him!!! AAAHHHHHH!!!" or something along the line).
Now assuming that the council got in trouble and everything is alright, some weeks/months have passed and Fuyutsuki has taken over Onizuka's homeroom class. She is on the roof talking to the Chairman/Chairwoman of the school saying that she and the students miss Onizuka, but they know that he'll come back soon. We then see Onizuka in the U.S. (starts the ending series credits) riding his bike on the open road (picking up a hot chick on the side and letting her ride with him, only to find out that she has a BIG husband and child and the husband thanking Oni, only Onizuka was crying on the side). He then arrives in a California high school and introduces himself as GTO to an american rebelious class, and he says "nice to meet you" in a signiture hardcore manga drawn funny/serious face. The End
I'm not sure if that is entirely exact, but it's late and I am tired. If anything, the manga is much better than the anime, but the anime was still great in its own way. It's just a shame that the anime was being made too fast and caught up with the manga still being made.
If anything, I really suggest that those of you who have not picked up the manga yet to go and get it. You'll like it just as much, if not better, as the anime.

I'd like to thank jzsuprarock and Strider_Lee for all this information. Indeed, the end for the manga is much much different. However, this got me interested in the anime, so maybe I'll watch it someday.

the anime NEVER addresses anything after vol. 14
and none of the saejima chapters are animated (thank god!)
and a lot of Uchiyamada and (Mr.) Sakurai's soliloquys are cut short/not included
Miyabi also never dyes her hair in the anime (damn shame too, missed out on one of the funniest scenes i've ever seen...)
the characters don't get developed nearly as much in the anime as they do in the manga (ESPECIALLY Urumi and Kikuchi) and a few characters get replaced or don't really appear ("shark" Fukada and "cute" Fukada aren't Murai's love interests in the anime, "shark" Fukada doesn't appear til the Okinawa arc and "cute" Fukada is replaced by a typical-bitch-teenage-girl named Akane Fujita...another shame but no one would understand the "fuka" pun if it were animated anyway)
i read volume 13 waaay too many times so i could go on for hours about the differences between it and the anime equivalants :)
