2nd Elfen Lied and maybe Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni (that was probably one of the most messed up opening to an anime ever) oh and Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpucho had a pretty cool first episode.

Something serious and dark Ergo Proxy sounds like it fits the bill perfectly, and if you're looking for something more adult oriented with blood, try either Elfen Lied, Gantz or Speed Grapher

Suitengu from Speed Grapher was pretty evil but when his past was revealed and you see some of the stuff that was done to him, I felt sympathy for the guy and started to root for him.
