Gilgamesh is serious and dark, the animation is a bit different but it's a great series. Also try hundred stories, it's dark and it's rocks. There's a lot more but I can't think of them right now.

I already saw Berserk and KGNE. I'm on episode 13 with Planetes and I already downloaded Perfect Blue but haven't watched it yet. So far I think NGE is the best mind f$#k anime I've seen so far.
