Play No One Lives Forever 1 & 2. Believe you won't be disappointed. Also try Septerra Core. The combat is terrible but the story is one of the best.

I don't know if Honey and Clover was suggested but i think it should fit just right in to your criteria. Also Chobits( one of my favorites even though I don't like Romance Genre)
