There's a typo in the header (stray line with a [ in it) that messed up the parser. I fixed it in the next Perian release, but I don't remember if mplayer works with it now.

Both of these are Apple's bugs. If your file is HE-AAC they'll hopefully both be fixed soon; I'm waiting to see if they fix their dev tools bugs along with the iPhone SDK before making an update....

Perian 1.0 set the codec headers for AAC wrong (they're different and possibly broken in MKV so they have to be reconstructed). It's nothing to do with 5.1 support; CoreAudio is just stricter now.
