the weapons could been set in less lethal mode, so shields could absorb them. also it didn't say if the shield could withstand sustained fire, so who knows. since we've seen IS performance are better...

only if there's sufficient time to develop new techs to match up against the aliens. gundam usually deal with sol only, so... not that much time, unlike FS1 where the lucifer had to travel a couple...
