When was the last time he actually took a look at cartoons out there? There are some serious ones out there.(Spawn and Batman pop into mind)
Anyway, back on topic, I'd tell them to:
1) Watch Elfen Lied.
or...
2) Watch Adult Swim's anime.
They'll get the point.
