People are way too stupid to waste baroque conspiracies on them.
Just tell them a few lies, make sure that they are in line with everybody's preconceptions, and have trust in the media that they take the cheerleader role or at least won't bother to really look into your claims. After all, research is costly and only delays publishing the BIG NEWS. Act swiftly so there's no turning back when finally everything comes out.
It's so easy and doesn't require any black helicopters, remote-controlled airplanes, or CIA operations.
