Aurion is one of the Head researchers of the TSAB Magitech Weapon and Spell Development departments. He is a sharp and witty person with an enigmatic persona. He had been in TSAB service since his youth, being an elite Enforcer even at a young age. He was first recruited at eleven, rose the ranks, and continued to be in active military service until he was sixteen; alongside his childhood friend (and soulmate), Almaria Corvette, who was a year older than him. As one of the most promising young Ace mages of his time, he was also a member of the Spectral Enforcers, a select group of mages tasked with more delicate, dangerous, and sometimes under-the-table dealings of the TSAB. The tasks involved being bodyguards, infiltration, interrogation (where he specialized), reconnaissance, working undercover; and sometimes… even assassination. He also had a fondness for Devices, and found a hobby in helping Device technicians with their work, most notably the now-retired researcher, Reban Innova.
His career as a soldier promptly ended during the Perfect Void Incident, an episode involving the Perfect Void, a feared Lost Logia considered to be of even higher level to the Jewel Seed and Book of Darkness. The entire team was wiped out in a failed infiltration mission, including Almaria. Only a devastated Aurion would survive the ordeal, later being a key factor to the destruction of the said Lost Logia… and the subsequent ruin of the planet it was then situated in, Duraxyll. He lost his left arm and almost his sanity at that time. After a couple of years, he received a prosthetic replacement for his arm. The recovery was a long and arduous story, made worse by his overwhelming guilt regarding the said incident.
In the medical records, his case of being mechanical and unresponsive during his one year of recovery was attributed to severe trauma and depression. However, this is seemingly not the case. Case in point, it was observed that his physical and psychological disposition during those times were almost constantly bleak. It was actually considered a small miracle by those who medicated him that he managed to live for so long in that state.
For reasons only known to him, he studied Intergalactic Psychology after his one-year recovery and graduated in three years with exceptional results. However, he was known for being an almost constantly dazed and sickly student during those times. His temperament took a welcome turn for the better after his term in school; with him gaining a sizable amount of sharp wit and dry humor.
Even stranger still, he entered the TSAB Technology Department almost immediately afterwards. A noticeable change in his disposition compared to his outwardly heartless demeanor during his Enforcer years can be seen by this period. Unbeknownst to everybody, Aurion had a severe problem plaguing him all these times. His cheerfulness was just a farce…
He entered the TSAB Tech department as a device technician, helping out and making connections with higher-ranking researchers to gain funding and backing for his personal projects. His proposal was making an ultra-functional Storage Device by direct interface, which was met with some skepticism. He proved his theory by (to the shock of many) actually converting his left prosthetic arm into a fully (AND highly) functional Device; which he aptly named Reishiki (translated as ‘Type Zero’). Needless to say, the device being a part of his body provided for excellent interface between Mage and Device; duly providing a basis for devices of such type in the future. This accomplishment was a big stepping-stone for his colorful career as a researcher. He also began starting to relearn his capabilities as a mage at those times. He volunteered as a combat-capable member of staff to bodyguard some other researchers on some more dangerous research excursions. However, there was something missing within Aurion, which he could not pinpoint exactly…
During the incidents with The Garden of Time and The Book of Darkness, he was away on a research trip on another sector of the galaxy. Upon learning the news, he decided to keep an eye on the exceptionally talented young female mages, namely the Aces. He took particular interest in Yagami Hayate, who was able to gain ownership of the legendary Book of Darkness. He did have his reservations in letting long-time fugitives, namely the Wolkenritter, into active service in the TSAB. And because of some strange… similarity with a certain person in his past…
This is where Aurion finally begins to play as a later-on integral part of the Aces’ lives… After two more years, he decided to have an 'extremely' close look on what kind of person Hayate was. He got his chance during one of his trips to Earth (Around the time before Rein was born), which incidentally, where the Aces were currently at. He devised a way to isolate Hayate from the others and have a long discussion with her. Predictably, Hayate was extremely alarmed and attempted to engage in combat. But he was able to set up a binding trap and managed to calm her down before she was able to free herself. Setting up his specialized magical isolation field, he held the 11-year old girl in an 'interview'. Unsurprisingly, the talk revealed much of the said girl’s attitude, feelings and view of the world around her. Despite talking to a stranger, she openly talked about her past. After learning the details firsthand, he decided that the 'Miracle Girl' was indeed a blessing to TSAB. And also, something about Yagami Hayate triggered something in him, spurring his interest further. At that point, he decided to keep a close eye on the actions and advancements of Hayate and her friends from now on, which wasn’t something someone would usually do out of pure curiosity. He uncharacteristically apologized in advance to the girl, citing his objective as something caused by his curiosity and insensitivity. Offering his service, he asked her if anything was bothering her. As it turned out, Hayate had some reservations and insecurities from her two years of service in the TSAB; mostly related to her past. There was also some guilt plaguing her, as well as sadness with Reinforce’s demise. It wasn’t too serious, but Aurion nonetheless did his best to cheer up and give her some counsel, all of which he thought would be of help to her in the future. After apologizing and thanking Hayate, he parted with the young girl with an affectionate pat on the head while teleporting away, claiming that they'll never meet again. Taking a strange liking to the equally weird man, Hayate was saddened by this, and was later found in tears by her worried companions. When asked, she simply said that she met an extremely weird but nice person.
By some extremely ironic twist of fate, Aurion would meet the Aces, including Hayate exactly two weeks later when they were commissioned to help with the research of Neo-Belkan magic in the very same facility he was working on. He took the unexpectedly early reunion in stride and cheerfully welcomed the newcomers. As he expected, Hayate's reaction to seeing him again was nothing short of hilarious; which later resulted in a long explanation after being threatened to be killed on the spot by her Knights. After things calmed down a bit and a proper introduction to Nanoha, Fate and Keroko, they were finally able to go ahead with the research. The other three Aces became comfortable around the weird man soon enough. Amusingly, Hayate harbored a childish resentment towards him that lasted for most of their one-week visit (He was forgiven later on at least). In the process of research, he decided to take a much more active part in Neo-Belka magic (which was already being incorporated into his personal style by then). He sorely regretted allowing the visitors carry out the field testing in his personal training room (Which was partially demolished due to the insane amount of power of the guest mages). In the end of their short visit, Hayate got her revenge by commissioning Nanoha (who was willing), Fate (who was reluctant) and Keroko (who was eager) to call him Oji-chan (an affectionate way of saying uncle) when they were saying goodbye. Aurion, who was by then taking a drink, promptly spat out his drink and coughed for a good minute at the sudden act of familiarity, much to the delight of the Aces (maybe except Fate who was worrying if they went overboard). Aurion thought wryly to himself that maybe he has met his match in wicked humor while watching the Aces and the Knights leave. This is also the time in which he suddenly felt about, “Finally having a stable ground.” It is currently unknown what this may imply.
He would later create his second device, AI-Extension Device Almaria a year after the birth of Reinforce Zwei. Now, he still retains a similar but higher ranked position in the TSAB tech department. Despite being invited to join Riot Force 6 by Hayate, he declined the offer and instead opted to provide her with new equipment and intelligence reports for the operations of her new squad.
And after StrikerS, he would be the person to ultimately encourage Hayate out of her depression for being an unsuccessful leader, spurring her to actively pursue further improvement, both as a leader and as an individual with such potential. He would be the one to upgrade her devices in the next arc of her life, and the event where not only Hayate’s life would be changed, but his as well…
And so StrikerS has ended… And GenerationS, begins…
Once upon a time a silent and brooding person. Aurion is a casual and humorous (in a way that most people would frown upon) person. He has a sharp wit and is very capable in holding his own in varied types of verbal chess. He usually exhibits an intentional mildly eccentric attitude most of the time, preferring to hide his vast wisdom and intellect under a whimsical exterior. He’s an outspoken and sometimes ruthless maverick who has quite a nihilistic view on the world. However, he usually chooses to follow most of the established regulations anyway too keep out of trouble, as well as accepting that some of them do work. He knows and does get along well with most types of people; as his tact is well-polished. He likes playing small ‘mind games’ with his co-workers, which usually leads to some embarrassment on the side of the victims. He is an able actor and voice actor with a wide vocal range (LOL Takehito Koyasu XD). He exhibits his brand of common courtesy by addressing most people by their surnames (if available) and adding military titles upon requirement. He is not very fond of using honorifics, and rarely ever uses such. He almost always treats those younger than him (or look younger than him, such as Tesla and Vita) like children (much to the annoyance of some, especially Vita), usually patting them on the head or using anything in kind. He has a wide range of interests, most notably with devices. He has a trademark prank to those who doesn’t know him much, which is pulling off his prosthetic left arm (which is usually under transformation magic to look like a normal arm). This more often than not scares the hell out of anyone of his victims. One of his favorite scenarios arising from this prank was when he performed this in front of the Aces, in where Nanoha and Keroko screamed, Fate ‘almost’ fainted, and Hayate (while visibly shaking) called him an alien from one of those Tokusatsu (think Kamen Rider and Ultraman) shows in Japan while backing away quickly.
Despite all these eccentricities, he is actually a very thoughtful and considerate person. He’s an expert in giving advice, counseling or just plain encouragement through unique (and sometimes borderline scandalous) methods. In fact; he took some time off his work to help in Nanoha’s rehabilitation after the serious injury she sustained a few weeks after meeting him with her companions. He also did some counseling for Hayate, Keroko and Fate who were unnecessarily feeling guilty for Nanoha’s injury. This was one of the factors that helped Fate pass her officer exam on her third try.
Aurion doesn’t like gambling. But he has been shown to possess a surprising amount of luck with these matters. He’s not too particular about what he eats. But he does follow a proper diet and has an inclination for spicy food. He also apparently knows how to cook quite well, except that most of the recipes he follows are from Earth.
He also seems to like occasionally flirting with women, which ranges from teens (the Aces and Tesla weren’t spared in this! XD) to mature ones (like Signum and Shamal). And it should be noted that he seems to do so with women who are in one way or another dangerous.
Relationships: Aces, et al.
His relationship with the Aces (around eight to six years before StrikerS) is like a playful uncle to his nieces (which he decided was the right description after they called him Oji-chan).
– Just like with pretty much anyone else, Nanoha gets along very well with Aurion. He treats he like an enthusiastic little student, willing to show and let her know things that related with his activities. He was also one of the technicians who helped build the Blaster System for Raising Heart. Aside from this, he also took an integral part in her recovery after the attack that almost cost her life; mainly on cheering her up and checking on her mental condition despite prior testing by others. He actually once snuck her out of her ward and took her flying during early morning on one occasion… Directly the
of what her doctors wanted since she might get extreme depression. Predictably, Nanoha was extremely upset with her disability and asked him why he brought her there because it was causing her much pain. Aurion only replied that it was a challenge; a challenge for her to recover and to once again soar in her beloved sky. He knew it was not a very advisable thing to do; it was a dangerous gamble, even. But he believed Nanoha needed a clear goal instead of sympathy to help her recover from her injury. Fortunately, it affected Nanoha exactly the way he predicted, filling her with much more determination to recover from her injury and once again soar the skies with her friends; culminating in her eventual recovery. To this day, Nanoha is extremely grateful to him for doing this. She is notably the next closest Ace to him following Hayate.
– She is noticeably very active when with him. This may be due to the fact that he usually allows her much freedom when she and the other Aces are under his temporary jurisdiction. She is also very fond of his deviant and unique (more like bizarre) way of conduct. Much to Aurion’s amused exasperation, she virtually goes nuts with excitement whenever she gets wind of any new gadgets or equipment he might be inventing or already invented. She begs him to no end to be the one to test out the new innovations, which more than one time already ended in catastrophic results due to her recklessness… Aurion considers her to be the Ace that is usually hardest to handle, both in casual terms and in battle. Out of the five Aces, she has the best style to last longest against him in practice combat, as her natural reaction time is phenomenal; usually equating to high unpredictability.
– Most likely the Ace that naturally amuses him the most during the Aces’ childhood; he used to claim that she
‘blushes about almost everything outside of battles,’
which made him strive to at least give the shy girl some more spunk by teasing her and giving rather intrepid pieces of advice. He was one of the people who urged her to be less timid around people; getting minor but noticeable results. Unfortunately, it was an extremely hard process (no thanks to Aurion’s methods of trying to get Fate to be more outgoing), which more often than not computed to Fate being in a constant state of blushing whenever he’s around. He was also involved in the development of her Overdrive Systems, Riot Blade/Zamber and New Sonic Form. He supports her and Kha’s relationship in sometimes mind-bending ways.
– He’s particularly fond of Hayate, who is obviously his favorite among the five Aces. Their acquaintance started on tense ground (no thanks to the blamelessly wary Wolkenritter), but later developed into a peculiar uncle-niece relationship. Hayate, much to the amazement of other people, acted like a somewhat spoiled and overly playful child when around him. She developed the habit of calling him Oji-chan after their first visit in the facility he was working in, and has stayed the same ever since. Though he never voices it out loud, he has succeeded in his small endeavor in giving Hayate a passable parent figure, namely himself. He never bothered in making an explanation for himself; conceding with the reason that he just wanted to give an orphan like him a parent figure. On Hayate’s side, she felt some sort of freedom to be completely carefree when around him, just like relying on a parent… The only way to describe it for her was that being around him was inherently fun. As years passed, she also learned to have borderline-flirtatious conversations/interactions with him, just for the fun of it.
The two grew to be remarkably close over the years. He’d most likely never admit it (he still retains the slightest tsun-streak from his younger years after all XD), but he already considers Hayate (noticeably more compared to the other Aces) as his very own daughter. Likewise, Hayate learned to regard him as a father-figure, even up to the point of playfully calling him ‘Otou-san’ (Father) on some rare occasions (this started around their conversation some time after the Jail Scaglietti Incident), which time and again causes the supposedly nigh-unflappable Aurion to stumble or completely trip over himself due to the awkwardness of Hayate’s display of affection (which is a definitive first, as nothing ever seems to consistently rattle him). On the other hand, the fact that Hayate sometimes addresses him as her father is a secret only known to the both of them. Their closeness is on a very familial level, but sometimes, the Wheels of Time really has a penchant for making things interesting. In their case, it was actually rumored at some point that the two of them had a romantic relationship, much to Hayate’s embarrassment and Aurion’s wry amusement. The fact that Aurion played along with the rumor at times helped little, only contributing to Hayate’s further embarrassment, Aurion’s further amusement, AND the Wolkenritter’s exasperation (or downright annoyance, in Vita’s case).
Aurion and Hayate
Going by those lines, her Knights (except Tesla) are not at all comfortable around him. Signum is extremely wary of him while Vita gets outright irritated by his attitude. Shamal and Zafira, despite being a little cautious around him, doesn’t seem to mind as much as the other two Knights. Tesla seems to be the only one to be comfortable around him. She calls him ‘Ossan’ (old man) and considers him a suitable adversary in tactical combat. The two of them would sometimes play mind games or strategy simulations against each other. The current score is 47:35 in Aurion’s favor, much to Tesla’s chagrin (Notably, even pranks/mind games were included in the scoreboard, constituting a large part of Aurion's leading points). Rein was noticeably terrified of him during their earlier years as acquaintances, but she later warmed up to him to the point of addressing him with ‘-jiisan’ (which roughly means ‘Grandpa’) Now, Rein is very warm with him, just like Hayate. Though admittedly, she still finds him scary sometimes.
– He would meet the fifth Ace, namely Kha, seven years before StrikerS. Kha would mistake him for his deceased father due to uncanny similarities in their appearances. Later on, the Cleric-Knight would regard him as his ‘Sempai’ (Senior). He supports Fate and Kha’s relationship in rather weird ways. Sakura, Kha’s Unison device calls him ‘Hakase-tan’ and likes to use his head as a couch. As with most others, the bubbly Unison Device is very fond of him.
Aurion is not interested in looking for a lifelong partner as of now, claiming that he still has a decade before getting worried and also saying that his much younger acquaintances qualifies as impromptu children already.
As the StrikerS ran, he got to know the Forwards of Riot Force Six in his two visits there.
– One of the first two Forwards he met during his visit. Aurion knew much of Subaru’s background, but Subaru didn’t even know who he was until after the introduction. She was the one who spearheaded the
‘Aurion Dauer Combat Capability Investigation’
plan that she and the other Forwards formulated (with help from Shari and Alto) after hearing that he actually defeated the Aces before. The process was, suffice to say, full of comedic events (and lots of whining from Teana) that revealed nothing more than the fact that Aurion defeated the Aces when they were 13 and nothing more. Finally manipulating Vivio to confront Aurion about his wins, he simply replied, “I cheated.” before walking away, laughing. Nanoha and Fate cleared up the issue, saying that Aurion was just better than them in terms of experience and skill back then. However, they wouldn’t reveal how they lost despite Subaru’ inquisitions. Unfortunately for the two of them, Hayate and Keroko all too cheerfully revealed how they all lost, showing Nanoha’s and Fate’s most embarrassing losses due to smart and yet completely asinine use of Aurion’s illusions, much to the embarrassment of the leaders of Stars and Lightning Squads. Subaru, despite herself, was sent to the floor laughing over the ‘Large Ferret!’ tactic that Aurion used to defeat the then younger Nanoha, much to the Ace of Aces’ chagrin.
– One of the first two Forwards he met during his visit. Out of the four prospective Strikers, she was the only one who knew who Aurion was prior to the visit. Interestingly, Aurion showed more interest in Teana than in any other forwards. This is mainly due to their similarity in styles, illusion magic coupled with range attacks. He actually took her aside for a few minutes and told her that if there is time, he is willing to teach her more about illusion magic and tactics, citing her as one of the more unique young mages he knows since he only knows few other mages who uses illusion magic. Teana was delighted by the offer. She was skeptical about Aurion’s rumored victory over the five Aces, particularly over Keroko, her idol; which Subaru exploited to drag her along the
‘Aurion Dauer Combat Capability Investigation’
plan despite Teana’s reservations. In the end, she actually felt quite proud that Keroko was defeated thru ‘sane’ means, accepting the gap in experience of several years ago. She tried hard not to laugh on how Nanoha and Fate were defeated, but was encouraged by Keroko to not hold back, garnering further indignation from Nanoha and Fate. Several months after StrikerS, Teana had already learned a few tricks from Aurion, as well as several tactics of applying her illusions properly in her attack plans.
– Erio, suffice to say was somewhat suspicious about Aurion when they first met; mainly because of his enigmatic persona that reminded him of some of the scientists who treated him as a lab rat before he was saved by Fate. However, he had a change of mind about the strange man when he saw how much Fate seemed to trust him. Out of the four Forwards, he was the next most enthusiastic person to Subaru in the
‘Aurion Dauer Combat Capability Investigation’
plan. As he did not want to believe Fate could lose so easily. In the end, seeing how Fate lost amused him a LOT despite himself. Unfortunately, he had the hardest time of the four since Fate (complete with a flushed face and teary eyes) actually begged him not to laugh, to which he complied with the best of his willpower. Needless to say, he wasn’t able to hold it, making Fate upset and (in a very uncharacteristically childish way) calling him cruel, subsequently wracking him with guilt. The fact that Caro had a crazy interpretation of the tactic Aurion used to defeat Fate helped little with his plight. Amusingly, Kha laughed over the matter as well, actually telling Erio to don’t hold it back. (…which earned him a slap on the arm from Fate)
– Caro, not unlike Rein, was a bit terrified of Aurion at first, even at times actually hide behind anybody (usually Erio) whenever he was around. It was probably due to the strange atmosphere around him, which confounded her. On the flip side, her main partner dragon, Friedrich, was not at all uncomfortable around the man, actually using his head as a perch on some occasion. In any case, Aurion managed to break thru the little girl’s apprehension with enough time. She was also a rather (or more likely the only) oblivious member of Subaru’s notorious
‘Aurion Dauer Combat Capability Investigation’
plan. Unlike the others, she wasn’t really too curious of the matter, but tagged along instead of getting left out. As it turns out in the end, she had the worst reaction of the four forwards when she found out how Fate lost to Aurion using an illusion of Chrono confessing to her. In her impression, Fate was attracted to Chrono by then. It shouldn’t have been so bad, but in this case, she thought that Fate STILL has feelings for Chrono up to now! This caused her to blush heavily and start mumbling about forbidden love between siblings… Fate’s embarrassment (especially her blushing) didn’t help the situation at all, as Caro somewhat involuntarily didn’t believe Fate’s denials. The case was resolved later, but not without a fair share of laughs on the other Aces’ (as well as the other bridge bunnies’) side.
He has a wider range of social links than one would imagine. Below is a relationship map of other CC’s and OC’s.
Relationships: Other OC's
He gets along well with the parents of Nanoha, Keroko and Fate. He and the Takamachi’s seem to hit off really well, seeing as Nanoha’s parents have some peculiarities of their own. He also gets along well with Lindy Harlaown, actually accepting his Japanese green tea with sugar and cream from the Admiral in impressive aplomb. (Much to Hayate and Nanoha’s astonishment)
Arf is more vocal about her discomfort about him when compared to Zafira; often growling while in her wolf form every time he talks with Fate in a familiar manner. Fortunately, she is no longer like this nowadays, but is still very wary about him.
The higher-ups in TSAB have several reservations about giving him promotions in the Tech Department due to his unorthodox and oftentimes reckless activities. He has connections with the ruthless but influential Admiral Mandy Carter, to which he shares a give-and-take political relationship with.
To the wonder of many, he oftentimes holds discussions with other people’s devices with AI, even when in possession of their masters. What’s even more perplexing is the fact that devices are unusually responsive to him. Fate actually approached him one time and asked him how he got Bardiche Assault to actually speak with him using three sentences at one time. Despite this fact, he himself doesn’t know why.
The ONLY person who Aurion seems to have a non-hostile aversion to is Erick von Long (whom he usually refers to as ‘that Warfreak’), a leading member of the Order of Freelance Mages (OFM) whom he once defeated when he was an Enforcer. Erick now makes it a point to challenge him whenever he gets the chance, resulting in a one-sided rivalry in which Aurion is only too eager to completely have no participation in; leading to some occasional comic chases, which more often than not include collateral damage.
The infamous Asagi Colwell of the
Belkarangers is another well-known acquaintance of Aurion, as she tasked him to create several pieces of equipment for the Belkarangers, namely the TV-to-reality conversion of the Surviblades, the Bouken Bo, the Accelular, etc. And amusingly, his trigger phrase (“Attack!”) and Almaria’s addressing him as ‘Chief’, due to the uncanny similarity with Satoru Akashi, aka Boukenred of the Super Sentai show from Earth, Gou Gou Sentai: Boukenger, causes the Belkarangers to address him as ‘Chief’ as well. Amusingly, they tried to get him to play some Super Sentai impersonations as well, to which he refused. (Not that it helped much…)
He had worked on occasion with Chrono Harlaown, who soon learned of his habits and value as an asset in a group.
He is an acquaintance of Saga and the Zerstroritter. All of whom he helps keep their identities from those not involved.
He and Yuuno have met only a few times, when he takes a rare visit to the Infinity Library. He learned about Yuuno’s background when he was doing his ‘counseling’ with Nanoha where he asked her about her close friends. In these times, he is also one of the people always asking on how he’s getting along with Nanoha, getting the usual reply of, “We get along great! (As friends)” He gets exactly the same answer from Nanoha when asked the same question, making him marvel on how a mature girl such as Nanoha is clueless about the several innuendos about her and Yuuno given by several people.
Aurion also happens to be an acquaintance of Former Admiral Gil Graham, having been assigned to one of the units under his command in his early Enforcer days before rising the ranks.
He was the one who gave Sophia Alexie her stand-in device called, ironically, Dauer. He’s also the one to give her specialized glasses for her to be able to live without her blindfolds. She’s usually quite warm in her own tough way towards him, calling him Oji-san (a more formal way of saying uncle).
He does maintenance for the devices of the Linebackers, Smith and Wesson. And also, sometimes does maintenance for the devices of Mai Enna, whom has grown a strange fondness for him, calling him Oji-san (Uncle) as well.
Aurion never bothered to make major alterations to his Barrier Jacket since his days as an Enforcer. Aurion’s Barrier Jacket was very similar to the standard Enforcer BJ design. The only noticeable difference was the darker color scheme with sharper details and a lighter frame. The performance of his requested design was significantly better than those of standard ones, allowing for good agility and defense at the same time. Now, there is a matching cape that pretty much covers his entire body. He also sports a lightly decorated blue gauntlet at his right arm and matching combat boots at his feet (these are doubled for the outer layers are sometimes discharged for quick spells). The most notable feature, however, is the extremely high concentration of magic energy in his Barrier Jacket for the spell units, which often translates to at least 6 cartridges worth of energy per set. He charges energy in Reishiki when outside of battle for easy formation. It usually takes one full day to completely charge one complete set with just his mana. Consequently, this translates to him being only to fight with his equipment at its best after a day or two in between each battle.
Another oddity about Aurion is that he has several devices in his disposal. Each will be discussed in detail as follows…
Expanded-function Device Reishiki (Type Zero)
His prosthetic arm also doubles as his multi-purpose device. Unlike other devices, Reishiki doesn’t come with a portable form (“Why the hell would I need a portable arm?!”). Instead, he opted to jam-pack the artificial appendage with several systems and functions that would do well to raise its processing speed and give it the functionality that far surpasses conventional devices (including several functions that were not characteristic of devices). It does have a simple toggled transformation spell to make it look and feel like a normal arm, though. In its device form, it looks like a bulky techno-gauntlet around his left arm, sporting a few buttons, a slot for something at below elbow level, and exterior circuits. Two large cylinders are situated at the two sides of his forearms, which serve as spell amplifiers, magic particle accumulators and at times, extremely powerful non-magic based energy blades. A streamlined barrel runs from a little below his elbow (also below the slot) to his knuckles. This serves as a high-velocity magic rail gun which can shoot firing spells at exponentially higher velocities (and subsequently, higher piercing power) and also non-magic based projectiles in occasions. Reishiki only has limited AI and has a mechanical male voice. He is activated without the need of voice command due to being directly connected to Aurion. He says,
while being revealed and says,
right after the formation of Aurion’s Barrier Jacket. The right arm gauntlet and combat boots are expansions of Reishiki’s components. These also serve as expendable but easily replaceable instant spell charges. (By releasing the magical bonds and converting the latent energy into a spell that takes less than a second to cast) Aurion claims that each discharge has a level of energy approximately equivalent to two magic cartridges. Reishiki only uses a cartridge system when the ‘Roulette’ or anything in kind is attached to his base (though this rarely ever happens since Aurion prefers to fight without relying on the cartridge system). Reishiki never addresses Aurion directly. This is because of the limited configuration of his AI that leads to his disposition as a tool that only replies to commands. He replies to commands by saying,
before stating the attack name. Aurion can mentally order Reishiki to state the wrong attack name to confuse opponents.
Later on, the most apparently unique function of Reishiki is the capability of linking up with specific devices to boost its performance. The most prominent one is Almaria, the AI-Extension Device to be reviewed in the next segment.
AI-Extension Device Almaria
A few months after his first official meeting with the Aces, Reinforce Zwei is born. After being notified by an excited Hayate, he was one of the first few to witness a Unison Device used by a member of TSAB. Needless to say, the results were fascinating. He remembered coming across the documented instances of such a device was used in the TSAB Archives. Despite noting the dangers of reversal of control between the user and device in the past, seeing what was happening before his eyes, he decided it was another miracle to be documented in his journal. After doing a run down on the several functions of a Unison device, he suddenly got a brainwave on the project he was currently working on, which was the improvement on the functions of Reishiki. After giving a quick apology and greeting to Hayate and 'Small Boss', he hurried back to the facility and started to work in his idea. He did make a point to apologize to the two and made a proper introduction with Rein, who was, incidentally, uncomfortable around him as well, hiding behind her mistress’ head ("He's weird, Meister!"). Going back to business, he worked on a way on how to integrate a utility that could significantly boost the more technical aspects of Reishiki's functionality without the danger of overworking the already strained circuit of his custom device. After almost a year of work, he was finally able to create his prototype AI-Extension Device; a one-of-a-kind intermediary between Intelligent and Unison Devices, which he named Almaria… in memory of his deceased girlfriend, Almaria Corvette. (He took the naming scheme from how Hayate named Reinforce Zwei in memory of the original Reinforce.)
'Her' appearance is that of a rather sizable sliding cell phone with a TSAB emblem in place of the usual monitor (a holographic monitor is utilized in place of a small screen). Her voice is that of young girl in monotone. Like Reishiki, she is another device which has a permanent form, staying in the form of a sliding cell phone. Unlike her predecessor, she has a considerably advanced AI and is able to hold intelligent conversation with others. Another oddity about her is that she is able to speak Japanese when not in combat use unlike other one-dialect devices. This was a feature added by Aurion for better conversation with the device. However, in battle, she switches back seamlessly into English, occasionally speaking German while Aurion is casting Neo-Belka spells.
‘She’ is more of an attachable AI-module to Reishiki than any sort of combat device. And partially due to this, she has a far more advanced Artificial Intelligence even when compared to the likes of Raising Heart, but not up to the level of Unison Devices like Reinforce Zwei. Almaria is attached to the hollow slot directly above the ‘rail gun’ of Reishiki. Upon attachment and locking in as a single part, Reishiki says,
From that point, Almaria’s more advanced AI takes over the main combat and support functions of the entire arm while Reishiki takes a back seat in managing the internal functions of the extremely complex combination of the devices. This is essentially upgrading a Storage Device to an Intelligent Device by attaching an appropriate module. Aurion from then on addresses Almaria instead of Reishiki when issuing commands since she is essentially the device being used now, having completely overridden Reishiki’s algorithm protocols as well as control over the arm’s magic processing tasks.
This is where Aurion gets the benefit of a significant power boost and better defense due to the more advanced AI being ready to activate much more effective defenses automatically; freeing Aurion from the hassle of handling basic defenses and allowing him to concentrate better on his improved arsenal of offensive capabilities. Almaria can be slid open for manual input of commands for more time-consuming spells, functioning like hotkeys for quicker and easier execution of spells. And naturally, Almaria also helps Aurion in processing more difficult spells. Performance-wise when used, Almaria is on similar footing like Raising Heart, Bardiche and Artherion. In this case however, she is also sometimes also capable of more advanced functions such as providing well-calculated tactical insights during battle.
Almaria addresses her owner as ‘Aurion-san’ outside combat. But during combat, Aurion’s title changes to ‘Chief.’ Though she generally speaks in an emotionless voice, Aurion has programmed her to crack deadpan comments that embarrass other people nonetheless. Aurion has even programmed her with a flexible voice range that allows her to speak like other females (or young males) convincingly when prompted.
Almaria has been shown to be able to cast pre-programmed spells on her own volition, more so when connected to her personal terminal in Aurion’s training facility. Of course, her spells are not as powerful as those of a normal mage. She usually bases her speech and actions on maximum efficiency and convenience. Almaria has proven to be one of the worst possible opponents in a logical debate time and time again, which some stubborn people would later find out; even at times surprising Aurion because of her commonsensical audacity.
Aurion has an odd habit of bringing along a couple or more random Storage or Armed Devices which he customized himself. None of these devices have AI capabilities and are just generally a bit sturdier and stronger than standard issue devices in TSAB (Incidentally, he also makes more money from manufacturing customized and improved devices for the higher-ranking mages of TSAB). The extra devices he brings can range from swords to firearms. And he tends to use them as a way of surprising the enemy by whipping out a new weapon on the fly. On some occasions, he discards these devices as magical grenades after loading them with magical energy using his ‘Roulette’. These devices are specialized to individually absorb the backlash of energy from the cartridges. Functionality is sacrificed for durability and a space-consuming energy shock-absorber system, allowing Aurion to use more cartridges without much strain, but at the price of typically harder spellcasting when compared to that of Reishiki or even normal Storage Devices.
Here are some of the common extra devices he brings. They are all stored as cards when not in use:
– Non-AI Armed Device which takes the form of a sword. 5 cartridges default
– Non-AI Armed Device which takes the form of a long-range energy rifle. 5 cartridges default
– Non-AI Storage Device which takes the form of an S2U-class magic staff. 6 cartridges default
However, as time went on, Aurion upgraded the first two VKA units to accommodate the experimental Armament-Extension System, which is one of his current magitech research projects. This function takes place when Reishiki’s frontal frame literally ‘opens’, the mechanical hand being slid to below the forearm to make room for a slot where the either VKA-01 or 02 can be inserted in their card forms into. When the device has been slotted in, Reishiki’s parts clamps in on it and starts transforming and integrating the attached device to become a part of his arm.
– Reishiki changes to become a sword-arm. Melee spells are augmented to a great degree at the price of a sizable reduction in range capabilities.
– Reishiki changes to become an arm-rifle. Shooting spells are augmented to a great degree at the price of a sizable reduction in melee capabilities. This is the more used function of the two since Aurion is primarily a ranged-attacker. Spellcasting in general is also easier here.
The programmed naming of the linked devices varies on the parts attached.
Reishiki SA (Sword-Arm)
= Reishiki + VKA-01
Reishiki GA (Gun-Arm)
= Reishiki + VKA-02
Almaria SA (Sword-Arm)
= Almaria + Reishiki + VKA-01
Almaria GA (Gun-Arm)
= Almaria + Reishiki + VKA-02
Regardless, the Armament-Extension System has yet to reach the ideal level of development as the preceding AI-Extension System of Almaria. While the formation and use of the linked devices in itself already cause additional strain on Aurion’s endurance, the system in itself is still inefficient to a degree, as the completed forms are arguably less than the sum of their parts; both literally and taken as a whole with his capabilities. There are indeed boosts in the specific area where Aurion forms the Gun or Sword arms. And of course, there are according decreases in functionality as a whole due to the specialization of the combined devices. But the problem is; the decrease in functionality is
lower than it should be
; thus the problem as it essentially ruins Aurion’s adaptability, which is pretty much his defining point as a mage. To compensate, Aurion only does this in situations where such choice is unavoidably needed or when he has somebody else covering him.
Detachable Cartridge Loading Apparatus Roulette
This is one of his more unusual inventions. The Roulette (as he calls it) is a magic cartridge loading system which takes the form of a thick disc about eight inches in diameter. Unlike normal cartridge systems, this particular loader is detachable and can be used as an instant attachment to his devices. Devices in the forms of staves or anything else with long handles are generally compatible to its clamp-like attachment at its base. The main function this gadget is force-feeding twelve cartridges’ (arranged in a circular manner) worth of magical energy into a single device at two clicks (six cartridges at simultaneously loads per round). This more often than not leaves common devices set to explode due to the heavy concentration of magical energy. One particular tactic he uses is supercharging one of his miscellaneous devices with the Roulette before throwing it as an extremely powerful magical energy bomb (After detaching the Roulette, of course). This loader is also compatible with Reishiki (by attaching it to Reishiki’s base) but as of now has not been used. In this mode, it only loads cartridges one by one.
Instant Spell Cards
Aurion also has access to a number of spell cards similar to those used by the Lieze twins. These cards function solely as expendable one-use only spell charges to be used when in need of a quick boost or springing a trap at the enemy. He mostly uses cards that are programmed with singular boost magic effects such as Magical Field Invalid and Acceleration Field in absence of a support mage. Of course, spells cast by these cards are a few levels inferior to those cast by real support mages. On spells that he can’t cast normally, he usually asks for some other mages or some of his colleagues in the Tech Department to grant him access to these spells thru programs set in magitech spell generators.
Part 2 coming up...
