Out of pure boredom during the history lesson, I decided to write something along the lines of... Medieval!Nanoha!
I still don't know where this will lead, but here goes nothing.
[Medieval!Nanoha] Chapter 1
1: First Scroll – Find
Spring. The times of bards and muses that start wandering the lands to tell tales of epic battles and brave heroes. Some bards would even sing songs of great Knights defeating dragons or saving fair maidens from tall towers. Others would bring tales of war and despair from the borders of the realm and strike fear into the hearts of those who listened. Not all stories were true, most of them were just inventions, but the people enjoyed listening to them. Bards had that quality that when listening to them, would take you to another realm of your choosing and, if just for a couple of minutes, make you forget of the harsh times.
The blunt truth was – those weren’t easy times. Bandits and raiders roamed the lands free and traveling alone from just one village to another had become a danger. The nobles in charge of the lands were more of less attentive towards their assigned regions and the king did not have enough knights to protect the whole kingdom. In the far reaches of the realm peasants had began to revolt, the army was stationed at the border to protect from barbaric invaders and the church was trying as hard as possible to widen its influence on the common people. Things did not go well, but that did not bother everybody. Most people had gotten used to the harsh life and had learned to accept it and live on as happy as they could. Here, far away from the border warfare and also far enough not to be affected by the political struggles from the capital, people lived a tranquil life.
Nanoha heard her name called out from the dark. The voice was at first slow, then it started growing louder and louder. With an audible groan, the girl opened her eyes at the calling voice. She was greeted by her older sister who, obviously, had no difficulties getting up in the mornings. Nanoha on the other hand, had a hard time waking up by herself. It was a daily routine to wake up soon after the rays of sun had hit the skies, and although her mother kept telling her she would get used to it, the girl simply refused to believe that.
Heading towards the dinner table, Nanoha was greeted by a few more faces. At the head of the table stood her father, Shiro. He was an ex-knight that had been in the service of the local noble until he had been severely wounded. After miraculously recovering he established along with her mother, the bakery that her family now ran. On the other side of the table stood her brother, Kyoya. He is currently working as a blacksmiths apprentice and is working his way to become a knight, despite his father’s wanting him to take over the family business. There was also her sister Miyuki, who was tasked in the mornings to wake her up. Unknown to her father, Kyoya was actually teaching her swordsmanship. The last member to join the table was her mother, Momoko. The whole family shared a mediocre breakfast before each took on their own way until night would fall again and they would return home. Shiro left for the mill to bring back fresh flour for the day’s bread, Kyoya headed towards his master’s workshop, while Momoko and Miyuki remained to tend to the bakery. That usually left Nanoha with nothing to do, although there were periods when she was asked to help around as well. Other times she was just getting in the way. This was just another morning, just like every other morning, throughout the whole year.
Today she wasn’t required for anything so she sped out the front door and onto the dirt paved road. She had promised to meet up with her two best friends Arisa and Suzuka first thing in the morning. Speeding up her pace she was greeted by a few of the villagers who knew her as she passed by their house. A full ten minutes walk away, her name was called and she was greeted by a blonde and a purple haired person. Both Arisa and Suzuka were daughters of some of the richer villagers who worked directly under the local noble. Nanoha had become friends with them a few years ago. She greeted both of them, then the three continued down the road, happily talking to each other and sharing the week’s experiences. Just like they always did.
Just a little while later the three girls could be found wandering around through the forest surrounding the village. They weren’t actually permitted to go there as it had become dangerous in the last years, but it was the thrill of danger that probably kept them going. Up until now, nothing bad had occurred. The strong-willed Arisa was leading the way back to the village.
Suddenly Suzuka screamed. “I think that bush just moved!” she told her friends. Nanoha and Arisa quickly turned around and went to see what was wrong with their friend. She was pointing her finger towards a bush to her right and looking scared at it. Arisa took the lead and moved some of the bushes branches away to look if there was anybody there, before backtracking with a shocked expression on her face. It took her a few seconds to regain her composure. “There is somebody there!” she said in a slightly alarmed voice. Nanoha hurried to the bush and looked inside it too. Arisa was right. Inside it was a body. The first thing Nanoha actually noticed though was the blood stains. His clothes were full of them. In a combined effort with her friends they took him out of the bushes. It was a young boy, probably no older than them, with light; almost shoulder length, blonde hair. He was unconscious.
“He’s bleeding!” Suzuka exclaimed “What can we do?” she continued. The question put the girls in a difficult situation. They couldn’t leave him there. “My house is the closest. We should take him there!” Nanoha finally broke the silence. Nodding, the two other girls lifted the body and slowly stared carrying towards the village. Nanoha remained behind and looked again in the bush finding an almost empty bag and a longbow. Snatching both of them she ran after her two friends.
“AAARGHHH!” a loud scream was heard throughout the house waking up all of its inhabitants. All of them ran at full speed towards the room from where it had started. It was a clear sign – the boy had woken up. Although questioning at first, Nanoha’s parents quickly took the boy in and took care of him. Now, in the middle of the night, the same day he had been brought in, he was finally conscious. Assuring themselves that he was alright, he was taken at the table for questioning and introductions. Nanoha explained how he was found in the forest and how they had brought him at her parent’s house. He proceeded to introduce himself as Yuuno of the Scrya clan. He was currently an apprentice at a monastery and was on route towards the Capital when a band of bandits attacked him and left him unconscious in the forest. That was all.
Yuuno stayed another few days with Nanoha’s family as they had insisted on it until his wounds heal fully. The boy wasn’t particularly happy with this decision, but he didn’t have any choice. Most of the time was spend with Nanoha as she was the one who had the freest time from the whole family. He would have enjoyed those times, had not more pressing matters haunted his mind.
On the second night of Yuuno’s stay, Nanoha heard footsteps coming from inside the house. Getting out of bed she heard the light cracking sound that the front door usually made when opened. She hurried down the stairs and out the door. Outside she saw a shadow hurrying on the road. The figure stopped for a second during which Nanoha managed to see the blonde bangs of her new-found friend Yuuno. Surprised she ran after him and bumped into him startling the young boy. He managed to hold his shout of surprise.
“N-Nanoha? What are you doing here?” Yuuno managed to say as lightly as possible.
“I should ask that!” Nanoha replied swiftly
Their conversation was killed off as shouts of angry people began to be heard not far from where they were standing. The rest happened in a spilt second. Nanoha heard Yuunos shout “Watch out!”, and then in the next instant she found herself lying on her face on the dirt road. Her back ached and her hands and arms were bloodied from the fall. Nanoha saw Yuuno lying on the ground just a few meters away from her. He was breathing, but something had blasted him really hard.
Around Nanoha, total chaos reigned. The surrounding buildings had caught fire and people were screaming panicked everywhere. Nanoha heard the neighing of horses and people running around everywhere. The girl looked around and saw Yuuno’s bow standing just a few feet away. She extended her arm and touched the wooden weapon. She could feel it slowly pulsating under her hand. It was a warm and pleasant feeling that she couldn’t quite explain. Although the bow was unfamiliar to her it felt like she had known it for a lifetime.
“Nanoha! Shoot him!” Yuuno’s cry awoke her from the daydream. She saw a big man with an eye patch, wielding a large hammer charging towards her. Instinctively, she raised the bow and her hand reached to the bowstring and pulled it as far as she could. She had never truly fired a bow before, although she had seen how it was done
Woosh. The arrow flew at full speed. And missed. Yet the man was tumbling on the floor, clutching his chest and screaming his lungs out: “Witch! Witch!” Nanoha had managed to see it all though. What had hit him wasn’t an arrow or anything similar, but a pink beam of energy – that had come from the tip of her bow.
The people’s screams became louder. Now they were all screaming “Witch! There is a witch here!” all around the place. Nanoha had become dazed by everything that was happening around her.
Yuuno looked in amazement and at the same time horror at the shocked girl. He ran to her immediately and took her hand then began pulling her through the chaos, towards the safety of the forest. The girl didn’t have anymore power to resist him and just let herself guided by Yuuno’s strong grip on her hand.
+ Nanoha and everybody else are older than their MSLN counterparts because I thought that having then as 9-year olds was a little inappropriate.
+ I’ve kind of decided against using ‘Magical Medieval Girl Nanoha’ as a name for the fic, but I can’t come up with anything better. Any suggestions on a good name?
