Ace attempt 1.0. Rip into it, please.
Lumina Celeste, the Unyielding Ace
Mina, The Unyielding Ace ("Well, I suppose it's true."), Blade Breaker ("What?"), Mountain Cleaver ("I told you, that was an accident!"), Boobie Prize ("...")
, a Shield Device.
Curvy, very very nice. ("I don't understand. I'm ranked S, so why do people keep saying I'm 'D'?")
Blonde, long, usually with a large pink hair ribbon.
Usual - Limited wardrobe. She's used to wearing her frilly waitress uniform, resulting in casual wear on the side of "boring" bordering on "monotonous". Mostly whites and light greys, T-shirts and dresses, with a few denim blue jeans and skirts. She does have a (white) large-brimmed sun hat she's very fond of.
Barrier Jacket - Winged silver tiara. Purple belted tunic and skirt with pale powder blue sleeves and edging. Dark indigo cape with a loose mantle, attached across her collar with a blue gem brooch. Single medium-small blue pauldron on the right shoulder. Silver choker. Silver bracelets on both wrists, with her Device on her left arm. Loose low soft boots, also pale powder blue with dark indigo trimmings.
Where there is evil afoot, where there are criminals to apprehend, and where there are innocents to protect, Mina... may or may not actually be there, but she'll certainly try her best to turn up.
Mina is not exactly naive, but she has a certain stubbornly optimistic quality to her that refuses to believe in anything other than a happy ending for everyone involved. Due to the sadly misguided nature of most criminals, however, this Happily Ever After is by no means
, and so Mina has made it her life's ambition to make it so. In her mind, she's a hero of justice, swooping in to save the day in the nick of time, sending the bad guys running...
... and when reality invariably proves to be different, she panicks and flails around desperately for a while, before finally calming down and getting back to business. While she's not too happy with a real fight requiring underhanded and dirty tactics to win, she reluctantly puts aside her Ideals of Honourable Combat when the situation calls for it. Given a choice, though, Mina would rather introduce herself to villains with a Dramatic Entrance, a Heroic Pose, and a Speech of Justice, exhorting them to Surrender Peacably for the Good of All.
She can also pronounce capital letters, which is always a neat trick.
Mina thinks that being an Ace is just about the Coolest Thing
, even if she has to do all sorts of really dangerous things for what amounts to not enough pay. Always enthusiastic and energetic, Mina would be a great deal more hyperactive and irresponsible if it weren't for the balancing factor of Cyrus, her Shield Device. While Mina may be irritated at Cyrus's general gloomy outlook, and uncertain on whether his last remark was innocent or insulting, she relies on him to keep her level-headed, calm, and alive.
Tactically, Mina prefers to charge straight in and establish a good defensive position immediately, but she's willing to listen to advice and follow through on them. She's best when presented with problems broken down into the abstract, and the sudden shifts in tactics during a battle often leave her unprepared and slow to react. Even so, she's shown quite a bit of initiative in taking advantage of opportunities mid-combat.
Life in a small town on the 73rd Administered World was not exactly the most exciting, but with all the ancient ruins around, at least there were always places to explore. To be sure, there were several sites that were off-limits to the general public, and the archaeologists on site had all sorts of tools at their disposal to keep the curious away, ranging from pointed glares to armed guards, but the safer areas were popular with tourists and field trips. The ruins pre-dated much of recorded history, and there were clear signs that the ancient Belkan Empire had set up a major outpost on the planet in times long past as well, appropriating the structures for their own.
Mina had, by the final year of high school, attained a reputation for always helping those in need, even if she had some odd notions about how she went about doing it. Her excellent magical potential test results were already common knowledge, and everyone believed her to be capable of anything, which was why, on the day of her class field trip, she was asked to locate a lost child who had wandered into the uncharted parts of the ruins.
Finding the child took several hours, the search ending just after sundown. After Mina, tired but happy, handed the child off to the other rescuers who followed her, she accidentally triggered a secret passageway which dropped her into what was later discovered to be an ancient Belkan armoury. This would not have been noteworthy, until one of the shields talked to her.
Cyrus had once been a Knight of Ancient Belka, or rather the personality imprint of a Knight of Ancient Belka. The real "Cyrus" was obviously long deceased, but the shield remained, dormant up to the point when Mina trod on him.
With Cyrus's help, Mina emerged from the ruins, and further examination revealed that the shield Device was now coded to her and her alone. Many offers were made from the TSAB for her to enlist, but she turned them all down, not wanting to deal with the regimentation of military life. She did consent to training from qualified instructors, as well as the occasional job as a freelance contract mage.
Mina's adventures had sent her across the multiverse, against a great many opponents and adversities. In the course of her missions, she had earned the title of Ace, as well as a bevy of descriptors,
of which she wholly approved of. Fame is a fickle thing, and despite her wanting to be known for her defense of the weak and helpless, people inexplicably remembered the time a stray shot accidentally and catastrophically blew up a mad scientist's hidden base through an improbable chain of events. Apparently "Protector of Innocents" did not quite have the same ring as "The Girl Who Disintegrated A Mountain".
When she's not making Justice Speeches at confused criminals, Mina spends her days as a waitress at a popular cafe in the city near her hometown. There's a bit of an Understanding between her and the young bartender, except that neither of them are quite confident enough to actually
anything, and so it's a bit low-key at the moment.
Cyrus is not very forthcoming about his own personal history, but he has let slip that his original purpose was to be a Device for his source personality, and he has no idea why he ended up abandoned on the world he knew as Farsight and the TSAB designated as Sefella, 73rd Administered World. He does give the very obvious impression that he knows more than he's letting on, possibly because he knows how much it irritates Mina.
Cyrus is downright talkative for a Device, willing to make his opinions known at every opportunity, whether by mage telepathy or vocalizations best described as a mellifluous bass. He would never be so gauche as to explicitly
his mistress, but the sarcasm is enough to drown in. Cyrus usually expects the worst of any situation, although he has enough taste not to mention especially unpleasant possibilities.
When not set up, Cyrus appears as a wristwatch-like object on Mina's wrist, without an actual watch face. Setting up requires no pass phrase, but Mina insists on injecting some sort of suitably dramatic announcement every time anyway. Cyrus in combat mode appears as a round dull grey shield a bit under half a meter across, but he also controls six other discs of variable size which orbit around Mina in a lazy pattern. These discs can expand up to two meters in size, and can be used for point physical defense, in addition to other magical uses. Cyrus controls the disposition of the discs far more quickly and efficiently than any normal human, which leaves Mina free to concentrate on other matters; in effect, they are a well-coordinated two-person team, rather than simply a Mage and her Device.
It has been asked before why, despite Cyrus allegedly being a Device from Ancient Belka, he does not actually seem to use any Ancient Belka magic. Possibly Cyrus knows, but he's not telling.
Apart from her magic, Mina is also very athletic and acrobatic, which helps her in finding high places to stand on in order to soliloquize on the nature of heroism.
- Power Blast: Mina points and shoots a standard beam of magical energy, ranked B in power. She can only fire one at a time, and it has to originate from somewhere on her person, but she can keep it up for an hour or so if she needs to.
- Shield Slice: Cyrus sends the discs flying edge-first towards the opponent. Their sharpness can be varied, although this is difficult to do once they are in motion.
- Shield Bash: Exactly what it sounds like. Mina does not have significantly more strength than any other fit young woman (outside of her Physical Boost magic), and she's not very good at fisticuffs anyway, but it serves as a good distraction, if nothing else.
- Deflection: Cyrus and the discs can deflect and reflect any attacks up to AAA rank or equivalent. This allows Mina to set up trick shots, hitting enemies from unexpected directions.
these work out very well, but sometimes, very rarely, Cyrus miscalculates angles.
- Shield Matrix: The discs can be arranged to form the vertices of a very strong magical shield. The exact strength varies depending on the number of discs used, the total area covered, and the amount of magical energy Mina pumps into the spell; at full strength and optimum conditions, it can block SS-ranked attacks, even if this covers only a relatively tiny area.
- Barrier Matrix: As with Shield Matrix, but with the discs each producing its own barrier, allowing for overlaps. Has the advantage of allowing barrier burst spells.
- Glide: Mina can fly, with most of the levitation on her feet. This also allows her to "skate" effectively just above ground level, but limits her top speed.
- Light: Mina can conjure up a small glowing orb of light, which hovers just above head-level in front of her, providing some illumination in dark places. This is easy enough for her that she does not need to concentrate on it.
- Physical Boost: Mina can supercharge her body for very short periods of time. This is extremely inefficient, and she cannot utilize much magical power, but it does help when she needs to leap several times her height onto a conveniently Dramatic lamp-post.
"Consider destiny," Mina said.
Narrative convention would have dictated a roll of thunder to punctuate her words, or at least an eerie wind to billow out her cape. Sadly, local weather conditions were most uncooperative, and so Mina had to make do with a dramatic gesture at the forbidding compound in the distance.
Undeterred, she continued, "Is it the destiny of the man we are about to apprehend to be apprehended by us? Is it our destiny to apprehend this man? Or are we just pawns in some larger, inscrutable game? And is this game played by unknowable beings with their own goals and desires, or by mere random chance? For what reason are we placed here, to carry out the roles we must play?"
"I would suggest that it is for the contract from the TSAB you signed three days ago, Milady."
"It is for Justice," Mina continued, resolutely ignoring the interruption. "For the highest cause of Justice, whereby we may rise above our basest greed and selfishness, which our quarry tonight has fallen prey to. We are the Allies of Justice, and we must serve our most Righteous Cause by vanquishing Evil wheresoever it may raise its nefarious head. And it is here, in this place, that Evil's nefarious head has been raised, thus allowing us the unparalleled opportunity to vanquish it! Fellow Allies of Justice, how shall we strike at the heart of this Evil?"
"At a reduced volume, I would hope."
Mina glared at the shield Device on her arm. "I've told you before, Cyrus, these things must be done with style."
"Your recommendation has been noted and observed," the Device blandly replied. "Your proclamations of your lofty goals have often sown confusion in the enemy."
"Was that supposed to be sarcasm?"
"I would never say that, Milady."
"Does that mean you weren't being sarcastic, or that you won't
to being sarcastic?"
Cyrus remained silent.
Mina sighed. "What higher cause can we dedicate ourselves to, if not for Justice?"
"Not getting shot at, for one."
"Cyrus, sometimes I think your point of view is far too..."
"Appropriate?" the Device suggested.
"I was going to say cynical," Mina snapped.
"The two are often indistinguishable."
Be that as it may
," Mina said, "our job here tonight is to flush the snake out of its lair, and see that Justice is done. Is that clear?"
"Utterly transparent, Milady."
- Mina is very, very good at her waitressing job. She's the primary reason why it's so popular, at least judging from the predominantly male clientele. She also makes a mean strawberry parfait.
- Thomas Montero, the bartender at the cafe, was in Mina's high school class. She's had a crush on him for the longest time, while he's only just coming to terms with being the not-quite-but-something-like boyfriend of an acknowledged Ace.
- Like many high-powered mages, Mina eats a great deal. She's slightly embarrassed by this, and keeps a close watch on her weight.
- The title of "Blade Breaker" just seemed to turn up one day, and Mina has
where it came from.
EDIT: Added powers.
