Two People, Two Paths
Divided Destiny, pt. 04
Glancing at her clock, Fate decided at at least head out of her room for now. She grabbed her jacket, as the temperatures and lights in the tubes were lowered at night to conserve power, and made her way out of the Residency. She took another turn at a junction and once again found herself alone. Some people might have been a bit frightened, but Fate knew that security was constantly monitoring the tubes for any signs of trouble. Then an idea hit her. A quick look at the nearest map on the tube's wall gave her her bearings and she heading off towards the Command Center.
After some turns she came upon her destination. The Command Center was the heart of the colony. It regulated the main functions, from power distribution to communication. All labs, factories, agriculture domes, and ore smelters reported to the workers here to keep a constant eye on the
supplies. This was also where the Eden Council resided for their daily meetings about the colony. usually the main structure was off-limits to colonists. An area was provided for people to pass through the structure rather than having to find a route around. For Fate, her clearance as a scientist at least allowed her entrance into the less sensitive areas. Mostly she needed it when bringing reports from the labs or meetings.
The inner doors parted, granting her access beyond the public area. Several doors were passed until she paused in front of the one marked 'Security.' She pressed the button on the intercom.
"Who is it?" came a voice form the small speaker.
"It's me, Fate."
A short pause came, "Ah, my time has come. Everything has caught up with me as fate stand before my door..."
"Mou, just open the door!"
As the door slid aside, the sound of laughter resonated though the empty halls. Fate stepped into the large room, her cheeks a tinge red from embarrassment. Across from her, a single security officer smirked.
"That wasn't funny, Signum."
"Oh, I thought it was."
Choosing not to get into an argument, Fate settled down in one of the chairs around the central table.
"So what brings you here, Testarossa?"
A shrug, "I couldn't sleep so I started wandering and ended up here."
"If that is what you say."
"Anyway, how are things? It's been a while since I've seen any of you. Everyone doing alright?"
Signum nodded. "Everyone's doing fine. No real problems as of late. Speaking of which, where have you been lately? Busy at the labs?"
"Yea. There's been an influx of projects over the past month or so so everyone's been pretty busy. Though I think it's worse over at the Advance Labs with all the terraforming secrecy and what not."
"So it seems," Signum remarks while leaning back in her chair. "Whatever it is they're being really stubborn about it. Only the higher level officers can get into the labs and that's only in a dire emergency."
"Wow, I didn't know the security level was that high."
"It baffles some of us, too. Speaking of terraforming, tomorrow should be interesting."
"Why do you say that?"
"Another talk with
is scheduled and you just know they're going to brag about their latest terraforming timetable."
Fate shook her head, "Oh boy. I just hope they don't do anything stupid."
"One can only hope."
"Ug, enough politics and work. Let's talk about something else."
The pink-haired officer chuckled. "Alright."
Their conversation went on for at least another hour. The increasing frequency of yawns signaled to Fate that it was time for her to turn in for the evening. She bid goodbye to Signum and wished the rest of her family well before heading back to her room.
The next day, news from the meeting spread like wildfire. While the details were not clear, something caused a heated shouting fest between the two councils and one of the two sent the shutdown codes to the communication satellite. It essentially cut off all communications between the two colonies. Unknowingly to them at the time, once the codes have been sent, there was no way to reactivate the lone communication satellite.
Weeks passed. Interest in that meeting amongst the public soon faded away. For many they could have cared less as it didn't really affect their lives or the workings of the colony. For Fate, however, it meant that she was now truly cut off from her friend. Her thoughts would wander to ponder how Nanoha was doing but for the most part she was kept busy by her lab work. Today she was working on an upgrade project for their vehicles and factories. The current line of robotic manipulator arms had been around since the beginning of the colony. With some of the new breakthroughs they hoped to increase their productivity and lifespan.
"I wonder if we can increase the power to these servos..." she muttered to herself as she looked over one of the test arms in the Standard Lab.
"Ah, Fate," called another scientist, "we just got the latest results from the new control circuits."
"Excellent. Let me have a look at th-"
Her sentence is cut off as the lab shakes.
"What was that?"
Before anyone can answer her, the room is bathed in red emergency lights and the colony-wide intercom comes to life.
"Attention all colonists. Please head towards the nearest evacuation point in an orderly manner. I repeat, all colonists please head to the nearest evacuation point in an orderly manner. This is not a drill. I repeat, this is
