It was a one way trip now, and Fate knew it. Hell, even mission control knew it. Her destruction of Bardiche had saved her only for a short moment, and her thrill of victory soon turned to the fear of death's unknown. The mutinous, sentient device had damaged the air filtration system beyond repair, and she did not have enough oxygen to return to the last TSAB outpost or enough to wait for a rescue team. All she could do was watch the CO2 gauge rise as she made tearful goodbyes to her family, friends, and lovers.
“What do you want to do now, Fate?” asked the sober voice of the project leader in charge of the failed exploration mission.
The video portion of the transmission cut out as Fate turned off the majority of her time-space craft’s power to conserve what little energy she had. She was already getting a headache from the carbon dioxide increase.
I don’t know… came her somber reply over the radio.
The old man sighed as he listened to the dead woman breathe erratically.
Wait…I see it! It’s outside!
“What is ‘it,’ Fate? What do you see?” the old man yelled into the communicator.
That door… It’s right outside the ship…
“You mean the one that we dug up on the Paxton moon? It’s just a door, Fate. There’s nothing behind it!”
I’m going out! It wants me to!
The old man cringed as he listened to Fate change into her spacesuit and switch the radio frequencies.
“Where are you?”
In the airlock…I’m going out…
“Fate…” he stopped himself. There was nothing he could do for her. She was dead, but her voice rang out from the communicator. He would listen till he could only hear the haunting silence of space.
I’m getting closer…The door…It’s opening!
Tears ran down the man’s cheeks as he listened and noticed that he wasn’t the only one in the room. Dozens of assistants and coordinators listened to Fate’s breathing and excited descriptions of the floating door in space. They stood in silence as grown men cried silently as Fate’s last transmission echoed through the building.
The thing’s hollow…it goes on forever…and…oh my God!...It’s full of dildos!
