Spoiler: In volume 6 when Ami's taunting Taiga in the restaurant over her being left alone when Ryuuji gets with Minori she doesn't think of being with Kitamura, something Ryuuji takes note of. Also compare their reactions when they're "Dumped". It seems like it hurt Ryuuji pretty badly, possibly as much as Sumire's rejection hurt Kitamura.
