they hook up way before the end, they get married at the same time as SDF Expedition Force's departure from Earth (at the start of the Sentinels novels, chronologically before the Southern Cross generation)

Ok, Robotech. Here's the deal. Basically, Robotech II the Sentinels was never finished, but a new series is in the works by Harmony Gold working with Tatsunoko studios. The Sentinels books and all that, in fact the entire premise of the Sentinels has been scrapped, and they're aiming for an angle away from the Macross characters...because it looks like they don't own those characters or the rights to create derivatives to the Macross franchise.

That's where it gets complicated. You see, Robotech is made of three independant, unrelated anime series.

SDF Macross
Southern Cross
and
MOSPEADA

Go to http://protoculture.lebhead.com/ to read up more on that.

In Japan, however, Macross is big. Not so much now as it used to be, but it used to be second to Gundam in mecha popularity. SDF Macross spawned a movie version of the series titled 'Do You Remember Love?'. Another sequel, made up mostly of music videos using movie and tv series animation, combined with about 10 minutes of new and original animation concluded the stories of Hikaru, Misa, and Minmay (Rick, Lisa, and Min Mei in Robotech).

However, Macross is still going. Macross II was made in the early 90's, but isn't considered official because the original creators had no input into it's production. The real Macross story continues with Macross Plus, Macross 7, a short movie called 'The Galaxy is Calling Me', Dynamite 7, and the new Macross Zero prequel.
Well, Robotech is completely different from Macross now, as it has developed its own world setting and completely different storyline... I think the Robotech Saga is officially ended with End of The Circle novel.

The complete Robotech Saga is like

Macross Saga (adapted from Super Dimensional Fortress Macross anime)
Southern Cross (adapted from Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross anime)
New Generation (adapted from Genesis Climber Mospaeda anime)
Sentinels (original novels by Jack McKinney)
End of the Circle (original novel by Jack McKinney)
Lost Generation (original novels by Jack McKinney)

That pretty takes care of all the stuff in the Robotech universe.

Now the Macross universe is totally different, actually the original Macross TV storyline is no longer considered part of the official timeline, replaced by Do You Remember Love, so many things now in the official timeline is different from the original TV series.
