My personal opinion is that she's the replacement for the peasant girl that Katsushirou gets involved with. They probably felt that protaganist needs some spicing up.

Well the context is still there. Film: Kanbei was willing to do things the unconventional way, posing as a monk instead of charging in. Anime: Kanbei also did things the unconventional way. Lying that Kikuchiyo is his blood-feud opponent and acting, thus shocking the hostage-taker so as to get near.
