Ending Explained here!
For those who think Aion is God:
At the end of the series, ep 24 when chrno slices Aion in half, he looks up (towards the heavens) and says "el, eroidema sabakutani", which roughly translated means "lord, why have you forsaken me".
He also give the "alpha and omega" talk in episode 7, but this does not necessarily mean that he "is" or "was" or "became" God from the beginning. Practically he says that because he can't be killed. He manipulates time. He will always exist and has existed, past/present/future. But he is not God, for if he was, "el eroidema sabakutani" would have no value in the story.
The whole irony is that even though he always exists, he is doomed to fail. "Aion's dream was foresaw by Magdalena to fail. It was predestined." as someone said earlier in the forum. This is the irony, evil will always exist, and therefore people will always have hope in god. If there is no evil, what need is there for god? Aion will always live (evil), and therefore people will always hope in God (good) and in good triumphing. The fact that evil exists puts faith at test. God tests people, in this case through Aion. If evil (Aion) was to forever perrish, then people would not need God, so practically that is why Aion exists; to put our faith in God to test.
The fact that Chrno is a demon and he becomes a good person, assures us that even evil people can become good and believe in god (modern day application).
And the end by Chrno and Rosette dying, is not supposed to make you think of who went to heaven and who went to hell, What happens after you die is unknown (modern-day aplication); there is no record of someone dying and comming back to life to explain what exactly happens after you die. Therefore, the story ends with them dying... because this happens everyday. People die. Yet what happens afterwards is unknown to humans, there are only "beliefs" but no "certainties".
The series finishes off with the picture at the end. This is the most powerful symbol in the entire series. The quality of a picture freezes time, it captivates it. It is a record of the past,
a sign of immortality
. It is what shows future generations that they were true (you existed). It is how they are remembered. The author here puts the question of "how will you be remembered after you die?"
Because truth is, everyone eventually dies.
