Yes, we do.
In other news, a crappy scene.
Spoiler for September the Sixth, Day 5, Yuki: Corner Store- Do Androids Eat Electric Beef?:
Do Androids Eat Electric Beef?
...Actually, I'm pretty hungry... but not for the kind of food we have in our fridge. Maybe I'll walk down to the convenience store.
[Scene: Kitchen]
My mother and sister aren’t around, so I leave a note on the fridge. My mother also left a note on the fridge, telling me that she left sandwiches inside it.
Well, that erases my need to leave the house... except that, even after eating the sandwiches, I'm still hungry.
...Odd. Well, off I go, then.
[Scene: Corner Store]
There's a small Western-styled convenience store just outside of the residential district, within walking distance of my house. It is, as its name suggests, convenient.
Not only does they sell the usual magazines and cheap snacks, but also canned goods and the like at cheap prices, making this place ideal for the middle-class household without the time or need to prepare food from scratch.
Which is why Nagato is here, I suppose.
...
...
Yeah, it's Nagato. No one else wears a school uniform on her day off.
Kyon: Hey.
Since she doesn't appear to have noticed me, I tap her on the shoulder.
Yuki: ...
Kyon: Fancy meeting you here, Nagato.
Yuki: ...
Oh, I'm fine, thank you. Lovely weather we're having today.
Sigh. ...The usual cold response, huh?
---
IF NagatoConvo=True THEN
And is it just me, or does she feel even colder today?
...
...Ah. I was pretty rude to her in that call this morning, wasn't I? Would Nagato care enough about my opinions to provoke this kind of response?
Better safe than unsafe.
Kyon: Um, Nagato, look, I'm sorry about what I said earlier... I understand that you have your secrets too, so...
She blinks.
Yuki: There is no reason to apologize. I was not offended.
...
Well, that's good then.
......
---
Nagato continues down the small aisle, putting canned items apparently at random into the shopping basket hanging on her arm.
You know, I've always wondered... I know that she eats, but I don't know the specifics. Does she have to eat, or does she eat because she enjoys it?
...Hmm.
...
[DECISION POINT HERE]
1)Ask her.
2)See her off.
Dinner Party...?
I make sure the clerk is busy with another customer, then lean in close to Nagato.
Kyon: ...Can I ask a question?
No response. I'll take that as a yes.
I'm not sure how to say this, though...
Kyon: Um, Nagato, do you need food to live like ordinary people, or...?
She inclines her head towards me, ever so slightly.
Yuki: ... Food is not a requirement for the sustenance of Humanoid Interfaces. There are other ways of maintaining adequate nutrition. However...
Kyon: ...Yeah?
Yuki: ...Eating is better.
And with that short burst of loquacity, she fell silent again, and continued to pack various items into her basket.
Come to think of it... that's rather a lot of food you have there, Nagato. Stocking up for the winter?
Yuki: ...Dinner party.
...I must have misheard.
Kyon: Sorry?
Yuki: I am purchasing supplies for a dinner party.
Nagato appears to be hosting a dinner party at some point in the near future.
...What?
Kyon: Um... what... kind of dinner party?
Maybe she means something else other than the established definition of 'dinner party'. I can't imagine Nagato having friends over, and if it was a party for the SOS Brigade, you can bet Haruhi would already have mentioned it.
Yuki: ...You will see.
She turns to me, seemingly not bothered by the considerable weight of her basket, which was overflowing with canned goods, juice cans, small snacks, and other such things.
Yuki: You are coming.
...So, was that an order, or an invitation...? Help me out here, Nagato. I don't understand what you're trying to say.
As I was being confused, Nagato had already gone over to the cash register and... had paid with exact change.
Come to think of it... where does she get money from, anyway?
The bemused clerk was now packing her groceries into a couple of bulging bags... they look even weightier like that than they did in the basket.
Kyon: Hey, let me carry those for you, Nagato.
Yuki: ...No need...
And grabbing all the full-to-bursting bags with one hand, she heads out the door.
...
Hey, wait up!
Kyon: Where are you going next?
Yuki: ...Bookstore.
Well, I have nothing better to do, so...
Kyon: Let me come with you, then.
Yuki: ...
She nods, imperceptibly.
Now We'll Never Know
...No, it doesn't matter. She probably just eats to live like other people, anyway.
Anyway... that's rather a lot of food she has there. ...Is she stocking up for the winter?
...I guess she doesn't leave her house too often.
Yuki: ...
Nagato, finished with her shopping, goes over to the cash register and... pays with exact change, it seems.
Come to think of it... where does she get money from, anyway?
The bemused clerk was now packing her groceries into a couple of bulging bags... they look even weightier like that than they did in the basket.
Kyon: Hey, uh, let me carry those for you.
Yuki: ...No need.
And grabbing all the full-to-bursting bags with one hand, she heads out the door.
...Well.
That's that, then.
...I'm not hungry anymore. I guess I'll just go home.
Crrrrrraaaaaaaappppppyyyyyyyy.
