Steampunk OR Cyberpunk!
Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s. Specifically,
steampunk involves an era or world where steam power is still widely used
—usually the 19th century and often Victorian era Britain—that incorporates prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology or futuristic innovations as Victorians may have envisioned them; in other words, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, art, etc. This technology may include such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne or real technologies like the computer but developed earlier in an alternate history.
Also consider the machines used in Miyazaki films, Steamboy, and the clothing in Victorian Romance Emma.
Images/renders that show technology not clearly powered by/associated with steam or clothing that does not resemble the Victorian/Edwardian era.
Cyberpunk is a science fiction genre noted for its focus on "high tech and low life". The name is a blend of cybernetics and punk and...It features advanced science, such as information technology and cybernetics, coupled with a degree of breakdown or radical change in the social order...Cyberpunk plots often center on a conflict among hackers, artificial intelligences, and megacorporations, and tend to be set in a near-future Earth, rather than the far-future settings or galactic vistas found in novels such as Isaac Asimov's Foundation or Frank Herbert's Dune. The settings are usually post-industrial dystopias...
Consider anime like Serial Experiments Lain, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Bubblegum Crisis, and much, much more.
Images/renders that do not imply a super-futuristic, near-future Earth. Renders of some anime character with a computer or with headphones on do not count as they imply no sense of the future marriage of man and machine.
The chosen theme should be very clear in the sig. The viewer should not have to guess which theme the sig is trying to fulfill, nor should the viewer have an understanding of the anime/render used to see the relevance to the theme.
Renders do not have to be solely from anime, though I think it more challenging. I also hope to see some animation this month, as we've had a sad lack of it for the past recent competitions.
