Same here. Perhaps you should go for the 720p. Or even the DVD rip might work well. You can take the subs from the 1080p and join it with the 720p or visa-verse.
Me, I converted my 1080p down to 640x480 because my laptop hates 720p whilst editing in Sony Vegas.
I put the subs as a separate file (subtitles.ass) so I can use the .avi file in my editing software.
I'm an editor, so I could help you a bit on codecs or conversion if you need help. I'm a pro at it by now, been an editor for 3 years and have had many codec/conversion errors (even compression errors) and have learned from all of them. Now I'm a XVID .avi person (with 1.5 Quatinizer) and the second movie came out as 2.56GBs from the 10.6GBs. Great quality too.
