Well, I'm not sure about "gloating", but the two obvious reasons to be pleased with decent sales would be: 1) the producers may have recouped their investment (since anime-original shows don't have quite as many other sources to draw on), 2) presumably increases the likelihood for other similar shows to be green-lit (including possible sequels/spin-offs).
