They were re-incarnated into Soul Society after dying in the human world.
Don't strain yourself too much over it. There are a few inconsistencies in his world creation, but this isn't really one of them. They probably just died when they were young so they appeared in Soul Society as youngsters.
If you want to discuss the topic any further, aspects of it are already discussed in several threads:
Soul Society ? (Anime ONLY, spoilers = BAN)
Death in Bleach (Beware SPOILER tags or cry)
[Manga] Aging in Soul Society (some spoilers)

Actually you do, at least for rukia.
When byakuya is telling rukia about hisana. He mentions that after they died in the real world rukia was abandoned by hisana as an infant .

Ishida likes Orihime, Orihime likes Ichigo, Ichigo and Rukia are friends/possibly lovers, Renji likes Rukia, Rukia likes Kaien, Kira has a crush on Hinamori, Hinamori is obsessed with Aizen, Hitsuguya likes Hinamori, Matsumoto likes Gin, Gin saved her from stavation when they were kids, Urahara and Yoruichi most likely are a pair, I believe Chad has something for Karin, I also believe Hisagi has a crush on Hinamori, Shunsui and Nanao are like a married couple type of relationship, Nemu and Mayuri are.... (dont know about this one), Ganju hates Rukia, Hanatarou probably likes Rukia and thats about it.

As of now the focus seems to be on Ichigo and a possible 3 side war in the physical realm. Of course SS will show up eventually so I wouldn't be surprised if she shows up better than before.

Soul Society = Heaven?
Sorry, i might explain some spoilers to those who havnt seen some episodes but..
1. In the episodes where Rukia and Renji were growing up in the flashbacks, there are really poor looking districts and it seems pretty bad, didnt they claim Soul Society to be like heaven?
2. We know that when people die in bleach, they go to soul society aka heaven. So what happens when people die in soul society?( the Captain Aizen incident) do they go back to earth or just disappear?
3. If your in soul society, it means you're there as a soul right? how can a soul bleed?
any answers or guesses?

In an early episode, Rukia said that Soul Society was better than Earth in 9 ways out of 10, so the deceased souls were going to a better place. It isn't Heaven. It's just an after life. I'm pretty sure that there is another thread on the subject of the nature of Soul Society. (Finding the thread will be left as an exercise for the student.) If you want to know more about Soul Society, ask there.
1. It is only supposed to be better than Earth, not perfect. (Though having seem SS, I have serious questions about how it is better.)
2. As for What happens to dead souls, they are re-incarnated as mortals on Earth. That subject ALSO has its own thread.
3. Spiritual bodies bleed spirtual blood. They can die also, so this shouldn't be too surprising.

I think it best that the Idea of heaven and hell, fundamentally Western teachings
not be brought up when discussing the Bleach anime that has it's own mythos loosely
based on eastern philosiphies.
But I think that some questions deserve some discussion.
1.) I dont recall Soul Society being claimed to be like heaven... as i recall during Chad's
introductory arc Rukia explains Soul Society to just be better than earth in the fact that you
dont get hungry. Only souls that have the ability to use spiritual powers get hungry
but all souls get thirsty. I found that amusing that Water the source of life is the source of
nourishment even for the dead.
2.) Again I think its best not to think that Soul Society = heaven... Perhaps its better to
think that it's more like The Underworld of Greek Mythology where all souls go to Hades
and either get sent to tarturus or the Elysian Fields... The Elysian Fields shouldnt be
interpretted as being Heaven either since it is part of Hades' Underworld Realm.
Just like how Soul Society has it's well off districts and not so well off districts
The Heavens in greek mythology are after all where the God's live. Anyway what
happens when spiritual beings are "killed" when in soul society? the best
explanation to that question is probably that they get sent back to Earth, or are
reborn. Soul Society relegates souls... and there has to be a balance between it
and Earth. i'm referring to that hourglass model during the Quincy Arc.
3.) This one is a very interesting question. and it begs discussion in my opinion. I will pose
this one question since we are talking about how can souls bleed. In some Christian
teachings Hell is a place of eternal torture or something to that extent where you or left
to your own misery... So i guess that begs the question... how does a soul suffer? how
does a spiritual being feel pain. Makes you wonder hmmm? My hypothesis is this
that souls are aware... that they have minds and by mind i dont mean brain but the ability
to think. Therefore since they are only bound by what they know prior to death, that
after death they are prone to relying on that knowledge. That when in death the
spiritual beings recreate what they know from Earth in order to keep exsisting as spirits
sounds odd and a lil buggy i'm sure... but i guess you could kind of think of it like the Matrix?
that souls need to grasp onto something they know that is tangible to them even if they
are not corporeal

Or maybe they say it is "better" than earth because the ones saying that are Death Gods and they live inside the Court of Pure Souls and don't have to deal with the crap outside their precious walls. Only Death Gods like Rukia or Renji might understand that its not really better than earth at all, its just a place where they don't have to deal with hollows, but instead, they have to deal with Death Gods (whom most of the commoners seem to loathe).

Just learned to watch bleach the last few days...and to be honest i became awesome later on. I watched from 1-46..Anime but have some questions here.
Which Captain is the strongest? Does it go by order? 1-13th?
Hitsugaya is definetly the coolest and threatened Ichimaru...but...is he really stronger?
I mean are the other Captains aware of eachothers power?
The previous strong Captain that fought Ichigo...he enjoyed fighting strong persons...and didnt for that long..why didnt he fought some Captains? Like sparring..

there was a special thread for capitans streangh, but...
numbers have diffrent meaning... capitans are all strong but they don't fight with each other so they don't know much about their Bankai's abbilites (its nomraly banned) but it's like anyone else's Shikai form everybody knows...
the coolest thing about bleach is that even if one shinigami gets owned with one shot doesn't mean he's much weaker (Abarai got owned by Ichigo and was clouse to Bankai - he got one fast critical hit
)
it's cool that you can't say that one enemy is hella stronger then the other, but diffrent (not like DBZ Freeza<<Cell<<Buu
)
and that's the way i think about it

It usually someone else that is the hero.

It has been said by many that when it comes to the surrounding World in Soul Society, the Mangaka had a brain-fart. The series has so many holes to poke on that it is ridiuculous and not to mention, frustrating. Its just another shounen series where the use of grey matter can only reduce the fun of things. So shutting the constantly nagging brain might enhance the enjoyment for this show, especially when the subject is Soul Society.

The swords are reflections of their souls. It's already been established that released swords return to their normal states when the user loses consciousness. I would imagine broken swords get fixed after rest or some "soul searching."

Just got another few questions:
1#
They are about to kill Rukia....erm shouldnt she then just respawn in the same world? Soul Society? That's where dead people go right?
2#
Whitey-chan/Hitsugaya became extremely fast a captain...as we saw in the flashbacks he wasnt "that" much younger he looked 10 and now as captain 15-16.
Is he such an enormous genius that he became death god & captain so soon?

#1 - No, welcome to a more eastern view of the afterlife. People that die in Soul Society are reincarnated in the living world. On the other hand, supposedly the execution method destroys a soul completely, so she may not come back at all.
#2 - Yeah, Hitsugaya is just that cool.

.... I saw vol 8 in English at Waldenbooks a while back. I think you're a little late to preorder #1.
thanks! I totally fail at teh intarweb.
I do have a question about the OAV that was released. I started to watch it tonight thinking it would be something different from the anime but it seemed almost exactly the same as the one episode about Ichigo's mother. Anyway, was this put out before the anime was started? (I ask cause its called Jump fiesta, so I thought about the magazine.)
Oh and one more thing... When it is said that Ichigo has to die for Rukia to regain her powers as a death god, wouldn't she have regained them when Ichigo's soul link thing was cut by Byakuya? Or maybe when Urahara seperated Ichigo's soul from his body and severed the chain? That still doesn't make sense to me..

Yeah the OVA thing was put out about a year before the show started to my knowledge. About the second question, in a normal situaition she probally would get her powers back after Byakuya's attack around ep.17 or so. What's really happening however, is a little complex and something that best left to the show to explain since its part of the overall plot for this season.

What is the problem? She started to regain the powers, when Byakuya "killed" Ichigo... After that point Ichigo went back to beeing a normal human.
Regaining the powers don't work in an instant, they return gradually.

I'm going to call a technical foul on that. The first seat is the captain (Ukitake) the second seat in this division is filled by 2 people (the two guys) and Rukia is a fourth seat (though that doesn't make sense, since I don't think she can call out her Soul Slayer).
One more thing:
The anime *has* mentioned why Rukia hasn't gotten back her powers--she says right before Ichigo fights Byakuya something to the nature of "Oh snap, the reason I have no powers is because I've been in a prison of Lethality Stone, which keeps my power down"... or something like that.

Well, Renji knew, that Byakuya tried to sever the links... however a success would result in a dead, or at least a human-only Ichigo. Now there is Ichigo standing before him as a Shinigami, so what conclusion is there for Renji to draw? He doesn't know, that Ichigo developped his own Shinigami powers, so from his point of view Byakuya failed and Ichigo is still using Rukia's powers.
Rukia was a no seat.
That's also what I think... to those who say Rukia was a seated Shinigami: reference please. Which chapter?

I dont think she was really referring to her being naked and getting a reaction, but more of her being a woman than a male cat. But maybe she doesn't realize that people are affected by her you know whats. I doubt she knew a lot of other guys other than Urahara and i can see that Urahara and Ichigo would have the same reaction.

Third seat = shared by the two stooges (previously Miyako)
As Morisato said, we've never been given any indication that Rukia actually became a seated member. When she first joined, she told Byakuya that she was unseated. Later on she says that she has been rising in the ranks, but I still wouldn't say that's good enough to assume she was a seated officer.
Besides, does it really make sense to send a seated officer after petty hollows?

Why hasn't been voted/assigned a new vice-captain for the 13th squad?
There is no reason really, I call it a plothole. No actually now that I think about it, those two 3rd seats are fighting for it so they see who can suck up more.

BTW, did they mention how much time passed since Kaien died?
If not: Maybe it was just a few weeks ago, so they didn't even have the time to search for a replacement.

This doesn't really help much, since we don't have enough information about the aging in SS.
Rukia and the others of her squad were around the same age, they are now... it looks like everyone ages with a different speed.
I really hope the author is going to explain this issue someday.

I've been searching web for pictures of division signs (you know, those that are on teichou's robe and fuku-teichou's arm patch). Haven't found any though. What does those kanji's mean? Is it just the division number?
edit:
Well I figured that one myself, so here's a picture if you are interested:

Those were plain numbers just like I thought.

The Movie that will be coming out will be where Grand Fisher shows up again. So Ichigo will have a grand battle with Grand Fisher to resolve everything. And I believe that it is set up to be after the SS arc.

Really?
I heard that it was going to be made into a movie but if it's an OVA that works too. If I'm wrong, sorry, that's just what I heard. And...
Shouldn't it be Ichigo who would kill Grand Fisher? Who would it be then, because I would think Ichigo would take care of him because of his personal connection and grudge against Grand Fisher?

You say it as if the OVA has come out already. Was it in the manga or something?

There is already an OVA about Ichigo's encounter with the Ground Fisher called Jump Festa 2004: Memories in the Rain + 13 Squad Omake. It is listed on AnimeSuki, so feel free to download and watch it.
As for the second appearance of Ground Fisher, it has happened in the manga, but there is no OVA about that encounter. There are some rumors that there will be such an OVA, but they are unsubstantiated and I personally doubt it.

The OVA was basically the Manga version of Ichigo's encounter with the GF. It differed somewhat from the Anime version but the end result was the same.

Theres another OVA coming out called "Sealed Sword", hes kenpachi's long lost brother named Bai Shin and like his brother, he wants to release his sword, features Hitsuguya, Renji and Ichigo. Has nothing to do with the manga though.
Ichigo never killed him, he just wounded him....later Isshin kills him

Ah okay, thanks for clearing that up Morisato.
