Quite frankly yes I didn't care about the guild but that's more than fine. What was important was seeing his guilt over it. It's about establishing Kirito as a character and showing his issues with trust, guilt, and overall social interactions. He pretty much fucked up and caused the death of his group. I didn't need to care for them in order to understand his guilt over it. It also further established how dangerous this game.
