Nippon's character designs are geared more on "realistic" and "bishounen" look, that you obviously prefer, while MH's are cartoony, weird and jarring. This is intentionally done - inline with Togashi's art - to create a fantastic world were very different characters (physically and internally) interact in a seemingly normal way.
Remember Mr. Beans (Netero's secretary) and how jarring it was to see a physically short, bald man, whose head looked like a bean and has green-colored skin, talking to our cartoony "normally-drawn" protagonists? How about a realistically drawn Johness being killed by a cute boy in Killua?
Even the PT members have varied character designs - the realistic, the cartoony/cute, the weird.
