My guess is that Hichigo wanted to be a human and needed a strong mother whose baby can contain the power. After the baby's born, he'll look to take over the physical form.
Something happened that caused Hichigo's plan to screw up and weaken substantially hence why he talked about waiting after losing to Ichigo. Or his plan didn't screw up at all but he never factored in that a human Hichigo (Ichigo) would simply forget or ignore his past life as Hichigo
