Also, Caster seemed to be a lot more humane in her flashback, with freeing all those kids and all. Yet she's pretty much just mass murdering people to power her spells right now. Hopefully they'll get into what prompted the change.

She isn't. Remember how she only dries the people to NEAR-death (aside from the first few)? Archer even commented that she "should be more ruthless and kill them", when he was in douchebag mode.
