Hmm, I could be wrong, but I feel the biggest significance of the world setting could lies with how it will be affecting the girls after they know the truth. In the way that last line "A kind and sympathetic heart is no longer a virtue" resonated heavily and Kurumi banging the table in anger, I think the truth will slowly crush the girls as the series progress. Idk if that eventually meant they took the time to give the world a setting and then choose to make light of it, maybe the show can find a happy medium to push and expand on the world view, but imo we definitely would see it partake strongly in the psychology drama surrounding the girls which anyway seems to be one of the show's true calling.
