I'd say that anime based on novels tend to have more "so-so" beginnings, but possibly kick-ass endings.
For example, for me, ep 1 of Juuni Kokki (The Twelve Kingdoms) wasn't that special. Not bad though... but ep 39 (original ending as it were) was seriously cool.
