Was the back alley the
only entrance or just the one they used? Arnold might just want privacy when picking out his fiance's jewelry.
Also, the fake jewels could be a new product they don't want anything to leak about, not that there's anything underhanded. The creation of the fake jewels could be done with the poor in mind, cheap "jewels" a poor/middle class person could buy their loved one.
