The Mass Effect world did not need Shepard. The ME3 ending proved that it was a waste of time for the Eden Prime incident to be investigated.

Now, that's a
fallacy. If Shepard didn't exist, everything would simply continue as it always had before and the cycles wouldn't stop. The choices would not have presented themselves.
