Yup, exactly!
That's the point of all of the fear mumbo jumbo though, that everyone fears something. Zaraki might have fear, but how he handles it is different than Byakuya. He confronts it head on, because he lives for battle. Byakuya does not. Simple as that, and that's why Byakuya lost this fight. It's the King and his horse principle.
I'm actually enjoying all of the nods to previously established narrative points in Bleach.
