I think you could try and read the manga before judging Tsukune. Becasue he really is not the typical male lead. Now if they show it different in the anime then that a fail on Gonzo. But the manga he is far from typical.

Spoiler for Episode 1:

The fact that he almost immediately clears up the misunderstanding that he is a youkai with Moka separates him from the regular shounen lead character in my book.
Normally the authors milk these misunderstandings for a long time before clearing them up in a some overly dramatic way.
