This is where the chain of events stops for me. Because telling someone who we suspect may have also had a mutual (admittedly unreturned) love for Battler would obviously make the maid upset. And then Jessica would have to comfort the dejected Shannon. So yeah Battler's an insensitive jerk.
If anything I think the Beatrice in the portrait was created after this image of Battler's ideal lover was created. Since there seems to be no physical description of Beatrice before the portrait appeared other than Rosa's flashback.
