The one that Eras mentioned? They exist in late eighties/early nineties, after Gundam bring real robot genre in the first place. "Young hero fall to the cockpit" is persistent tradition brought from super robot genre, Gundam just play or deconstruct it.
One example I can mention is VOTOM, the main character is seasoned soldier.
