Both the Ein and Drei ending are absolutely valid in their own right. In fact, personally I prefer the Drei ending, since it avoids the uber-cruel and incredibly bitter scene where Reiji is forced to kill the isolated and desperate Drei. "It makes sense that you won - since you had someone to protect. I, on the other hand, have nothing. Nothing at all". I won't forget that. Basically, this key part of the Ein path kinda invalidates the whole second book, which gives things a bit of a bad aftertaste to me. The resolution of the Drei path flowed a bit more natural, that's why I slightly prefer it. Now, going for a "draw" style Mio ending in the anime might feel like a cop-out ^_^; ... I doubt it.

I actually prefer the tragic, bitter conclusion. To me, the resolution in Drei's path happened way too quickly, although I can see why some might like it.
