Market studies usually only have a few thousand respondents in their calculations. That said, I don't know if this was a professional study or not.

It's still anime original. Besides losely basing the characters on the ones from the novels (very losely) and having a somewhat similar premise, it doesn't appear to actually adapt the novels.
