That is addressed in detail in the manga (and
probably its thread)... but it's not hard to piece it together... Mamoru's and Maria's reactions during the ape analogy (replacing those details) with what the narrator said that will happen at the end of the 2nd episode... it's unlikely to be just a coincidence... now that I think about it, add to these the narration at the end of 3rd episode, I am absolutely certain that it's relevant.
