The way I saw it, in her final moments, Makoto was using the last bit of her power to make the hill seem warm, beautiful and green, like it was in the summers that Yuiichi played with her when she was a fox so long ago. It was all a facade she conjured, and when she finally left, the facade fell, and we're back to the cold snowy hill.

Spoiler for question 1:

No, Ayu wasn't searching for her school the whole time; she just got scared when she discovered that it didn't exist, because that would mean that she didn't either. What she was searching for the whole time was her doll, the doll that Yuiichi gave her that allowed her three wishes.

She didn't remember that she had a school; she truly believed that it existed all this time, because of the play school she and Yuiichi had when they were kids at the big tree (hence why Ayu claimed they could wear whatever they wanted to school and could eat taiyaki every day for lunch - they made their play school like that). It wasn't until she went to the big tree and realized that she and Yuiichi's play school was only a dream, not reality.

Spoiler for question 2:

There's no significance in where exactly Akiko works; KyoAni just threw that line in there for the ones who wondered how she could support herself and Nayuki with the assumed absence of her husband (I think he died or something).

Spoiler for question 3:

Remember that this is the fake Ayu talking, who doesn't know the difference between reality and fiction, past and present. It's a given that not everything she says will make sense. The real Ayu wears a white cat hat and jean overalls, and is in the hospital in a coma until ~the last two episodes.

All of the demons were Mai's doing. There was no such thing as demons who randomly attacked Mai; remember that part where Mai lied that demons were attacking her and Yuiichi's sunflower playground, trying to prevent him from leaving? Because of her magic, she manifested these "demons" into reality, and they dwell at the school because it sits on her and Yuiichi's sacred playground.

Hm, I remember that. I thought it was just that her rump was warm, and since she sat there long enough, the frost in that one spot melted, so everything around that spot was still frozen and looked different.
