Actually, it's not the author that chooses their illustrator it's the Editor/Publisher that pairs them. Heck, it's not uncommon for Author and Illustrator to never meet in person.

If CLAMP wants to work on a Light Novel, it doesn't matter what the genre is because they have a brand name already that would attract interest- The Editor/Publisher main concern would never be 'Does this fit the Image?'...
