I guess the main reason Mugi's heritage was never really questioned (at least by the other HTT members) was because she spoke Japanese when she was first introduced...
(and Sumire was introduced trying to steal a cupboard)
Azusa left her hair down briefly, but I thought she despised being called a "Japanese doll" (just to look more like Mio)?
