The author actually apologized for it in the afterword. Not that this makes it better, but he realizes it's a flaw in his storytelling style. He's not good at writing group dynamics so he always focuses on two characters at a time. To make the dynamic change in different stories he changes the person interacting with Kirito. And then he makes them all girls for some reason.
